Roll back to Tiger

Hi Guys,

I've had it with Leopard, and I want to roll back. I have a G5 iMac and Leopard just isn't working out for me.

I'd like to roll back to Tiger, but I can roll back to Panther or Jaguar if I need to. My problem is that I can't roll back to any of them!

Whenever I try to boot the CD, I get the big circle with the line through it. My iMac won't even boot the disc. Is this because Leopard thinks it's better and won't let you boot CD's with older OS'es? It's so weird because it happens with all OS discs except for my Leopard disc (which starts up just fine).

Any thoughts on what might be going on?

Thanks!

Are you trying to boot off the operating system which came with that particular machine?

Are you trying to boot off a known retail version of the operating system which came out after that machine came out?

Have you tried using the startup manager to boot that optical disk?

Does the disk say Upgrade or Update on it?

Is your data backed up?

Hi,

First off, thanks for your help.

I am trying to boot retail discs for both Panther and Tiger (which both came out after I bought my computer). The discs don't say "upgrade" or anything like that. I put the disc in the computer, restart it and hold "C". The Apple logo shows up on the screen, then I get the circle with the line through it. I also tried the process by starting the computer holding the "Option" key and then selecting the CD, but I get the same results.

A few minutes ago I booted the Leopard disc, ran disc utility and formatted the internal HD. I have all my data backed up. When I got Leopard, I upgraded the machine originally from Tiger. I had so many problems that I thought a fresh install would be better, but I just ended up with a different set of problems.

I'm not sure where the original discs that came with the computer are. I could try to find them if you think it might help.

Thanks,
Robert--

Update: I'm trying to now startup the Jaguar discs (original retail boxed version) and the disc isn't even showing up when I hold 'Option' on startup. However, the Leopard disc starts up just fine.

Last weekend I spent 7 hours on the phone with tech support due to Leopard-related issues. Specifically, I have had Airport wireless issues, random crashes, and Time Machine formatted a hard drive that I told not to (it was a full 450GB external).

Since I've done a fresh install I'm getting lots of random crashes, including crashes while I'm copying files.

IMO this is BY FAR the worst product Apple has ever released. I've been a diehard Apple fan for years, but at this point I'm ready to go to Vista.

Thanks,
Robert--

Hi there,

I'm still in Leopard-ville, and I really want to roll back to Tiger. My sound no longer works, my Airport connectivity is intermittent, and YouTube is so choppy that I can't watch video (although it doesn't really matter because I have no sound).

I can't spend another weekend on hold with Apple tech support. Does anybody have thoughts on how to roll-back?

Thanks!

I'm not ready to roll back, but I can understand why someone would. I've had nothing but problems from the moment I started using it. The main reason I want it was the new Spotlight and Time machine: both are great, but neither of them are as good as I expected. Stacks stinks, it's actually worse than the old way where you could get a hierarchal menu. Install was (and is) a nightmare. I still don't have admin privliges on my own computer (working on that on another thread.)

Just my two cents. I think the leopard concept was great, but could have used more R and D. It's just not ready for prime time

I imagine that I will have to back up all of my files to an external hard drive, then do a clean install of Tiger, and then move everything back... which will take three days. I am not sure I want to go that route. I lost three days "upgrading" to Leopard. BTW, archive and install was a disaster for me with Leopard... I had to do a clean install in the end which wiped everything out anyway.
