The iPhones SIM will work with any other GSM handset worldwide.

I rely on my mobile and reliable as Apple tech is, I do not like the idea of losing the ability to switch back to other devices if there are problems, flat batteries etc etc. It seems the only option is to wait for a replacement to be mailed to you

Can't believe it as a regular early adopter, but this has stalled my purchase - maybe for a very long while - now I can get the 3 USB dongle/broadband combo for the Powerbook that I was going to get after all!

Not true about the latter - at least not in the U.S.

I cannot use another provider's SIM card with my iPhone but I can use my iPhone's SIM card with another AT&T GSM phone or with an unlocked GSM phone but the required data plan does not apply when using the SIM card with another phone but I can place and receive calls. I've done so with a Razr 3xx I was using with AT&T prior to purchasing an iPhone.

Not exactly.

Only with an O2 carrier locked phone or with a non-carrier locked GSM phone.

The iPhone's SIM card activated with O2 can not be used with my Razr 3xx GSM phone which is carrier locked with AT&T.

I stand corrected. I meant to say it'll work with any unlocked GSM handset.
