Quicktime uploads to You Tube

Hello Apple Fans,

I'm looking for a little advice and am trying to shortcut reading loads of manuals. Basically I have several short films I want to put up on You Tube in the best possible quality visually while adhering to the constraints of You Tube.

I have QT 7.2 (no pro version). Can someone talk me through the best expert settings I should choose to make my films look as good as they can?

I know this is a big ask but, I'd be most grateful.

I suggest you not waste a lot of time and just use the iPod settings found in iTunes to convert your files.
YouTube is still converting most uploads to Flash Video and you don't have any control over that process. You could send a very nice looking 320X240 file and they could muck it up during the conversion to Flash.

Hi QTK,

interesting suggestion although, I'm not quite sure what you mean. Where do I find these iPod settings in iTunes? I understand YouTube mucking a nice version up by converting to Flash and I have no control over this.

Move your QuickTime file to your iTunes Library.
Highlight it and use the Advanced menu to convert it to the iPod settings. Drag it out of iTunes and upload it to YouTube.
This will only work if your QuickTime file is sized to 320X240 (requested by YouTube). The conversion takes about 4 minutes per minute of video. Larger dimensions will be exported at 640X480 and are too large for YouTube.
You can also export to iPod settings in iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand.

Hi QTK,

ah, that's interesting that you can do this from iMovie. That's the software I have used to edit these movies. Presumably to use the iPod settings I go to the 'share' command under 'file' then which selection do I use? Email, Web, Web Streaming, CD-ROM or Full Quality? Hopefully not Full Quality as I know that will make the file too big.

The first two don't use a full frame rate. Try the CD-ROM settings (if they make a 320X240 file).
Or you can use Expert Settings to make a 30 fps, 320X240 file. Use H.264 and AAC audio at 128.
This file should match the YouTube requirements and you wouldn't need to convert again to the iPod settings.
