Hi-

Welcome to Discussions!

If you need help with the physical installation of the drive, the following will help:

After the drive is installed, boot to the Tiger OS install disc. After you select your language, in the second pane, the menu bar apears on the desktop. In the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Disk Utility, and format the drive (Mac OS Extended-Journaled). Once the format is complete, you can install the Tiger software to the second drive.
Just make sure you select the new drive as the install destination. Doing so will leave the drive with Panther untouched.

Thank you. When I boot up with the Tiger install DVD, I can't get past the "Apple" screen with the progress timer continously spinning. The only way I can get to the Disk Utility, is when I open to Panther and open the Disk Utility program. Is there anyway to install from that point? I have installed the Seagate fairly easily.
I tried holding down the C key, but I get a black screen with a lot of text, asking me to restart holding down the on/off radio button and it returns to the same screen, when I try again. When I remove the Tiger DVD and restart, I get that Apple question mark for a few seconds and then Panther kicks in. Am I doing something incorrect? I can't seem to get to the point of selecting the language and then selecting the Utilities, as you have instructed. I know where that is, but the computer is not getting there on the boot up with the Tiger DVD.
When I open the Utilities in panther, with the Tiger DVD mounted on the desk top, the Disk Utiliy offers only the Erase function, I can never get the Enable Journaling function past the greyed out stage. Advice??

The black screen with the writing, telling you to restart, is one of two things- either a kernel panic,

or you need to reset your nvram:

Startup holding command option+of. After booting into open firmware, at the prompt type reset-nvram and press return. Then type reset-all, and press return again.

Then, restart, and see if you can boot to the DVD.

I finally called Apple support and we then tried several times to load Tiger onto the Seagate hard drive, with no success. I swopped positions, putting the Seagate on top in the G5 and the existing HD on the bottom. The Seagate will show on the desktop, but I cannot install Tiger on the dam thing. I even tried with only the Seagate HD in the G5, but when I boot up, I continue to get only the gray Apple screen, with the progress wheel spinning continuously for 5 minutes, then the computer shuts down. The Apple support folks think that the Tiger Retail Install DVD may be NG. There IS a line of type on the bottom of the DVD which reads,"Apple Retail DVD Backup DVD-R". I purchased this on eBay. I wonder¿¿¿¿¿ In doing a little research, it seems that THIS Seagate SATA 7200 Barracuda SHOULD be compatible with the G5 and it SHOULD work. Hmm........(never did get that black screen again)

I have just completed the upgrade from OS 10.3 to Tiger on my G4 Powerbook and the OS runs fine. However, I tried installing the same OS, from the same disc on my G5 and the same thing happens as before...the progress wheel turns for about 10 minutes and the computer shuts off¿¿¿ Go figure¿¿(I have decided NOT to install the Seagate Barracuda for issues we previoulsy discussed) Tiger runs fine on my laptop. Are there other options to installing Tiger on my G5, other than popping the disc in and once the install disc is mounted on the desktop then clicking on the Tiger install icon and the darn computer shutting down?
