where do all my screenshots go?

i just noticed after taking over 20 screenshots that they are not on my desktop....any ideas?

MacBook Pro 17" Hi Res/ 2.4GHz/2X2GB/160HD, Macbook Black, iMac 20" C2Duos, Mac OS X (10.5), AirTunes, BT Mouse & keys, iPod V, Nano, HP1500, LG 32" LCD

You might try a search using Spotlight and the word, "Picture". I just checked in Grab and there seems no way in there to change the default location.

You might also try downloading a shareware app called Cocktail-- amongst many other things, it allows you to view and edit the save location (and file format) for screenshots.

ok i tried using spotlight, it finds picture docs but nothing recent i did.

Ok, so how did you actually take the screenshots-- any chance you could have used the "save to clipboard" rather than "save to desktop" shortcut by mistake? It makes the same shutter noise so it's easily done 🙂

Taking Calum's earlier suggestion, have you looked in the Keybaord shortcuts presferences to make sure that the commands have not been changed?

Also, when you save a screenshot, open an application (like TextEdit) and try Paste, just to see what happens.

only pastes the last texts i copied when did what you advised.

I also restored the default settings for the keyboard short cuts, still nothing indicating where the screen shots went.

One thing for sure is it works on othe users of this MBP !, just tried that one., so i can say i narrowed the problem down to a user issue.

Curioser and curioser. . . .

If the shots are not being saved to the clipboard, and they are being saved to the right location in the other accounts, either they are not being made/saved (despite the click sound), or their name/location is being obscured.

I know you tried Spotlight, but have you tried Finder with some extra search parameters?

i tried all the finder options available, still no picture created from a screen shot ;(

maybe i need to delete a preference or cache file somewhere.

Well, the obvious one would be com.apple.ImageCaptureApp.plist in your Username (Home) Library>Preferences folder.

What does Grab do if you use that?

Does not exist in Leopard's or user's pref folder., hmmm , strange.

You mean the preference does not exist? Mine was in the Username>Library>Preferences folder.

As I say, curioser and curioser. . . . Have you tried Grab?

The missing preference may give some clue as to why the pics are missing: perhaps they were never taken in the first place. Time for some deeper checks.

Can't think of a solution at the moment but does the same thing happen when you try and capture a whole screen shot, Shift Apple3. see if that does the same thing it might allow you to do it via that method or take you to the destination of the other screensets?
