Extract background image from PowerPoint Presentation imported into Keynote

I am working with an imported PPT in Keynote08, and need to extract the background images in some of the slides to make some corrections (they were also imported into the PPT so that I cannot edit them from there). These are showing up as background images on the slides, an I cannot see any way to select or extract them. Is there a way to do this? Or are these hard wired into the presentation and cannot be extracted?

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the forums!

Keynote presentation documents are actually "packages" of files that the Finder presents as a single file. The slide backgrounds should be accessible in the presentation package. To show the contents of the package, in the Finder Control-click on the file, and choose "Show Package Contents". In the Finder window that opens you should see a variety of files, and some of those files should be the background images used in the presentation. I would suggest copying (not moving) those images to another location, make the necessary corrections, and the set them as the slide backgrounds from within the Keynote application. (The alternative is to make the changes directly to the images in the package, but that may risk corrupting the document.)

I should have known! Very clever! Thanks for that.

This does now lead to a couple other questions out of curiosity.
1. does this mean that if I insert another background via the inspector that it will remove the last image from the package i.e. reducing the size of the package?
2. is this why, if I change a slide background from a color fill to image fill, that the default image is the first image used in the slide series (in my case, it is an image from slide 1)?
3. Where does PowerPoint hide them?

In any case, thanks for the fast reply as that solved my immediate issue!

1. Yes, the image is removed and the package size will be smaller (at least that's what happens when I test it).

2. The default image seems to be the background image for the overall theme. (Perhaps if the document is imported and there is no specific theme attached, it defaults to the first image fill.)

3. I have no idea -- I believe that PowerPoint's format is a unified binary, so all of the resources used get stuffed into a single actual file. I may be wrong about this, however.
