No "Low Battery" warning on new (November 07) MacBook - Kernel Panic

Hello,

I'm not sure is this is the right forum for this, but since the problem occurs during a specific battery state, I'm going to post it here.

I just got one of the new November 07 MacBooks. The machine is great, and screams with the pre-installed Leopard.

First thing I did was plug it in to charge as I started configuring software. Once it was fully charged, I pulled the plug, and began using it on battery. My plan was to calibrate the battery, by running it all the way until it forced a sleep, then shutting down and plugging it in again, as Apple recommends.

Problem is, I never got the "Low Battery" warning, or even the sleep warning. At around 10 minutes of power left, I simply got a kernel panic. A few seconds later, the laptop just switched off.

I plugged in again for a few minutes, then ran it down again to see if I could reproduce the error, and I did get the low battery warning.

The next time the battery ran down, it gave me the kernel panic.

Is this happening to anyone else? Is it a new MacBook problem, or a leopard power management problem? I'm having no other issues at all with the MacBook or Leopard. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

MacBook (November 07), Mac OS X (10.5)

since updating to leopard, i get no low battery warning. time indicates maybe 9 min left and then computer suddenly shuts off. battery life is less too. i've gone through 10 or more re-charge cycles and it still continues to happen. this must be leopard as no problem before, then immediately a problem. it makes me want to go back to tiger. this is first time i really felt like i made a mistake in upgrading the software.

Hello all,

Short followup here: I've have 30 successful cycles after the first couple of kernel panics, and it's time to calibrate the battery again. I tried to do it yesterday - charged the battery all the way, used the macbook while plugged in for two hours, unplugged the adapter and continued to use it until I got the low battery warning. I shut down everything and let it sit - waiting for it to go to sleep. Instead, I got a kernel panic, and the computer shut down. It would not restart until I plugged it in, but I know there was some battery left, since it panicked at 2% battery. I let it charge for an hour or so, then used it again until I got the low battery warning. This time, it went down to 0%, but panicked and shut down instead of going to sleep.

I'm trying this again, after charging all the way last night, and just leaving it on to drain. I'm at 20% right now, and I'll post to let you know what happened.

Hello All - I think I've figured this out. Looks like a software bug with Leopard.

I did get another kernel panic just now at 0%, after the low battery warning. But then I had a revelation. In trying to calibrate the battery, I had set my energy saver settings to never sleep under the battery settings - so I could leave the notebook overnight to drain. I gave it a bit of a charge, then set the battery setting (in energy saver) to sleep after 20 minutes. I restarted, used the computer for a while, got the low battery warning, the computer went down to 0%, then went to sleep as it should.

I believe that since I had the computer set to "never" go to sleep, Leopard didn't know how to handle it when the battery ran down, and kernel panicked. Perhaps this happens on new MacBooks, because these settings aren't written yet? Regardless, it's obviously an OS level bug here.

For those having the problem, make sure your battery settings under energy saver are set to allow sleep after a time.

I'm having the same problem as everyone else here, and the computer WAS set to sleep after 15 minutes. I was calibrating the battery, and at about 10 minutes left, I got the warning to save everything and that the computer would go to sleep soon. At about 6 minutes left, it panicked. So I plugged it in and restarted and haven't tried draining the battery since.

I had this about two weeks ago.

I didn't realise that it was caused by the battery - I just got a Kernel Panic from my month old MacBook.

I came across a page explaining how to check the Kernel Panic logs so I thought I'd look at mine and a search of the log's contents found this thread.

I remember now that I was draining the battery to calibrate it.

Hi guys!

First when I bought my MacBook, the System Profiler showed charge capacity of about 5500 mA/h, which of course was wrong (should be 5200). And I think it was this exagerrated value that led our MacBooks into the delusion that there was enough charge left while actually the battery had been drained, producing a kernel panic.

So, I'd advice everybody suffering from this problem to make sure the System Profiler does not report an excessively high charge capacity, and recalibrate if it does.

Don't care if it shuts down with a kernel panic — let it rest for 5-6 hours and then charge it full, as the calibrating instruction says. Also I wouldn't recommend very intensive discharging for it can lead to a lower measured capacity.

...Checking if it's cured my MacBook now.

So, it started working normally (going to sleep) and then broke again??

Hello Anton,

That's interesting about the battery capacity. I remember mine showing around 5300 and change. It now shows 4950, after the "failed" calibration last night. I thought 5500 was full. I'm using it tonight, and it'll probably run down, so we'll see what happens.

I got a few kernel panicked when I first got the macbook a month ago, when I ran it down to do the first calibration, once that finally worked, I never really tried it again until a day or so ago. It was probably just a coincidence that I changed the sleep settings and it actually went to sleep the one time instead of panicking.

Well, the full charge shows correctly now, and I had reset the PMU and the PRam last night, so maybe that helped - who knows. We'll see if it works tonight.

I am having the exact same problem. New Macbook, trying to calibrate battery. Battery goes below 5% and machine has a kernel panic. I've tried 4-5 times and each time it panics so I know its pretty consistently having this problem. Has anybody solved this problem? Has anybody tried a new battery or anything like that?

I'm really bummed out now - I was pretty excited to finally have a new Mac laptop. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi I have exactly the same problem. Brand new MacBook 2.2 with 10.5.1 installed. What i've tried:
1. Erase install with 10.5.1 dvd
2. With al updates installed
2. SMC reset
3. PRAM reset

SMC firmware version: I forgot, guess 1.24f

I called applecare and they won't acknowledge my problem, they told me that I have to go to apple shop and do the test.

I told the technician that today & yesterday did the test by my own and 5 out of 5 my MB just shut down instead of going to safe sleep. They said that its normal if it dont go to sleep when it have no power left...after a hot discussion with technical support I said "even my cheap dell is going to sleep mode if the battery reached certain level of low...but this one dont...how can you as a technical support told me that this is normal and within specifications? doesnt make sense right?"

With 3 times kernel panic and 2 times trying to go to "safe sleep" and failed to do so then shut down(because of not enough power).

Im sick of this...I still have my faith old powerbook and a new MBP with no such problem. The first kernel panic I lost a lot of open document that Im still busy with because its just shut down

I also look at my system profiler before crashing...(thx to Anton Shepelev)

at 2% battery left the battery information is as followed:
180 mAh remaining, 5412 mAh max full capacity
it can be true because thats the max capaciy of MBP battery right?

the I can see its decrease from 2%.....1%.....0%..... and yeepp guess what? kernel panic!!! and I even dont have enough time to press the shut down button...it just shut down.

After that I chargeg my MB back and look at the system profiler. System profiler now showed me 5192 mAh and charnge from 0%...yess finally a good max capacity value I suppose. But after it fully charged its max full capacity back to 5412 mAh....da*n!!!

So like Anton Shepelev said it might be because of this optimistic value(5412 mAh). The OS think that it still have enough power to put the MB to sleep but actually it dont!!!

Eventually I went to a well known apple shop "apple premium reseller" because we dont have apple store in our country...I talked with the technician on the phone and he told me that he more than happy to help me....and yes it is, within 5 minutes they replaced the battery...

I immidiately checked from system profiler and it now read "max full capacity at 5198 mAh"...I hope this will end my problem...

I will update you guys when I've done testing(callibrating) with the new battery....because it still charging right now...
