I am happy to announce that the tests I have run today have proven to me that the new RAW functionality in Aperture 2 when combined with the Adobe DNG converter produces a nice starting point when working with the RAW files (SR2) from the sony R1.
Yay!

David Schloss was able to convince me that the new DNG support in Aperture 2 was in fact accessing the actual RAW (Mosaic) data of a converted DNG and that I would be able to take full advantage of it. What was still unclear is how my SR2 files would look using such a brute force import without the finesse of Aperture's loving carress...
Well, they look fine.
I took several different shots and imported the SR2 into LightRoom and then did the conversion to DNG and loaded them into Aperture 2 so I could A-B them on the same monitor. Of course the rendering of the preview can't be expected to be exactly the same in both applications, but I have to tell you they looked remarkably the alike!
The files looked just a hair more saturated and had just a touch more contrast in LR but it was nothing significant. That tiny difference could just be attributed to a choice on how to display previews by the programers, and may have nothing to do with the RAW data. Even if it is due to the lack of RAW support for my particular camera It was so subtle I really had to look for it.
2 nice side effects of converting to DNG...
A. files get much smaller if you use compression and don't imbed the SR2. (you may want to understand these options well before converting a bunch of stuff.
B. SR2 files that get converted to DNGs have previews in the finder. woot!
Thanks again David!
So, good news R1 people! Start converting to DNG and hope for the day the R1 is directly supported.
