DVD Player Freezes

Hi everybody!

I went through almost a dozen pages and haven't seen any thread about my issue, so I really am looking forward for an informed and competent answer.

My girlfriend has bought a bit less than a year ago a brand new MacBook,1,83 GHz Intel Core Duo, 512 Mo SDRAM. Since then, and through every upgrades to the OS, we've been experiencing problems with the computer when playing DVD's. I can't remember we've had this bug anywhere else.

The problem is that, when watching a movie on the computer, if we hit pause, then when clicking play the movie won't resume. It doesn't happen everytime, it looks completely random. But it still can happen 3 or 4 times by watched movie. That's annoying.

Then, being in full screen mode with DVD Player frozen, I can't get back to the OS, or even bring on the Force Quit box on screen. Option+Tab won't work neither. Hitting the power button won't even force it to get back to the Are you sure you want to shut down dialogue box. The only thing I can do is to hold down the power button to force a reboot, and hear the Mac sound again, of course.

It has also happened when browsing the menus or when fast-forwarding.

It seems to be link to episodes when the sound level shortcuts on the keyboard won't work neither.

In most of those situations, I could reckon some sound meaning there was some action down there in the cd slot, but without any results. I tried to wait, and check if the playback would eventually take on by itself, I've waited over half an hour with nothing getting back to life.

I've checked the memory, though that was a while ago, but no problem was seen.

Any ideas anybody?

Thanks.

I also have this problem but it has only happened when the computer isn't plugged into an outlet. Sometimes the mouse is responsive and sometimes it isn't. It also seems to happen only when the program is in full-screen so I usually try to prevent from happening in the first place by shrinking the window before resuming play but of course I forget and usually at the least prudent time.

Just adding my information here as well so that anyone looking and/or giving advice can have as much info as possible. I currently have a PowerBook G4 running Leopard 5.2 and ever since I've upgraded to Leopard, the DVD player freezes as soon as I put a DVD in. The cursor moves, but beachballs and won't let me click anything. I've tried Force Quit and just about everything else I can think of, but the only solution is to restart the laptop. Even then, the DVD player still freezes, so it's not a solution, but a band-aid to use other applications afterward. I have max RAM at 1.33 GhZ and I've never had a problem with this application before. Any help would be great.

Same issue to report and I have been looking for answers, I am using a MacBook G4 - 1.33. It all works fine, the drives does read Audio CD's, but when launching DVD Player app it freezes and I cannot "force quit", hence I have to restart by pressing the power botton..

I plan to bring this into the store and see if the "genius" can figure something out

I've got the same problem. I think it may have started when they updated the video driver for the PowerBook G4 that I'm running. VLC player works fine but the Apple DVD Player 5.0.1 just puts the machine into some sort of a kernel panic that prevents anything from running - I can't force quit, I can't command Tab. The only way to stop this is a hard reboot - ouch!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Peter

I have this problem since updating to Leopard. Front Row works fine, but does not have all the features of the DVD Player. I was hoping for a fix from Apple in 10.50.1 & 2 but no luck.

When Safari shows a problem you can report to Apple automatically, but when your whole computer seizes up what is one supposed to do exept pull the plug.

One lives in hope.

I have been experiencing the same thing as most of the posters here..

During DVD playback with "DVD Player", the film will randomly, and without warning, freeze, sometimes with the audio doing a broken record of the last moments of movie sound. It only occurs when I am on battery power. Nothing can fix the situation except holding the power button until the computer restarts, and when it does, it will eject the DVD and will continue to reject the DVD after reinserting it several times. The drive spins the DVD up to speed, reads it for a second, then it spins down, and ejects it as if there's something wrong with it. After awhile of this, and some DVD wiping on a cloth, it might accept it and then I can play the DVD again. This is really annoying because I only watch DVDs on battery when my girlfriend comes over. It takes a while to get the movie up and going again, and the spot it froze at isn't saved so we have to seek until we get there.

Same problem here. MacBook, max ram (2GB), just replaced my super drive. This is the error from the console before a hard to hard reboot:
