Macintosh IIci Pram Battery

The backup battery is a half-AA 3.6-V lithium primary (not rechargeable) battery. It is used for many other purposes, and can therefore be readily and widely obtained. Camera shops, general electronics shops, and of course, eBay sellers spring readily to mind.

None of the Macintosh II series is difficult to work on. The battery is held in an open-top cage on the logic board, as usual. Gently pry the ends of the cage outwards, sequentially, to get the cage top to pop upwards. Take the usual care to ground the machine, to dissipate static from your body while you are working on the logic board, and to replace the battery with the correct polarity (marked on the cage bottom).

Some Macs will work without a battery, some despite a weak or dead battery, and all with a functional battery. It is a trivial cost to replace one, and a false economy not to do so.

1) Open the cover.
2) Unscrew the Phillps screw near the HD/floppy cage
3) Remove the HD/floppy cage
4) Remove the power supply (Lift straight up - use some force, as it unplugs from the motherboard as well)
5) Replace battery
6) Reverse steps 1-4 to re-assemble.

You will, however, need to remove the power supply before the HDD/FDD assembly. There is a tang with a catch into the body of the PS, low and behind the hollow 'pillar' that is screwed through the logicboard with the Phillips-head screw. You need to hold the catch out of the PS body before you can lift the PS, using quite some force in a direct lift. This is the most awkward part of the disassembly.

Having removed the PS, you can disconnect the FDD and HDD cables, pull away the other catch on the righthand side of the HDD/FDD assembly, and then swing the assembly up and away from the front wall of the case. The battery cage is then visible near the front edge of the logicboard.

As the manuals put it, re-assembly is the reverse of disassembly. You will know that the PS is reseated properly when you hear the catch snap back into place.

The IIci is a nice machine, especially if you can use a NuBus video card instead of the inbuilt Vampire Video. Enjoy. When you have finished the re-assembly you will understand how it was that the (practised, no doubt) Jean-Louis Gassée (Apple VP at the time) could completely assemble a IIcx, as a public demonstration, in about a minute.
