Checking off days

Checking off days

I am a new mac user (yea!) and I am in the process of switching from my paper to calender to ical. I want to know if there is anyway to cross of a day like I do on the paper calendar. An x or a slash or a way to make past days darker - anything to make it easier to see the current date. Thanks!

I am desparate to know how to check off or change the background color of finished days also.

in the week view the current day is shown with the day/date bolded at the top of that day, whereas the other days are not bolded
in the month view the current day is shown shaded as opposed to the other days that are not.

these are the only two "tricks" to visually target the current day in these views.
