EPSON DX4800

Has anyone successfully got a Macbook to print to an EPSON Stylus DX4800 ? I have followed all instructions in Apple’s printer help pages but without success. I have Mac OS X 10.4.10 and this did not come with a preloaded driver for this printer, so I downloaded a driver from Epson’s website (Epson Stylus DX4800.dmg). Postings elsewhere in the discussion pages suggested that such files needed to be unpacked, which I have done, but still the Macbook does not recognise the driver and I am going around in circles. Grateful thanks for any advice.

Thanks, yes, have done exactly that. When I try to print something, I click 'add printer', to get the printer browser. I click on the DX4800 that the Mac has recognised correctly as a USB printer, then in the 'print using' box I click on 'other' and click on the location of where the driver is (Mac HD). Problem is I can't find the driver anywhere, despite apparently having installed it. Any thoughts ?

You haven't done that correctly.
Before printing, go to Print & Fax prefs or to Printer Setup Utility. Delete any old entry in the list for your printer. Click on Add or +. Even though your printer shows up now with USB next to it, do not select it. Instead, click on More Printers. Then click on Epson USB. Now in Print Using select your printer model (if your printer supports borderless printing, you may need to select All - use the pull-down menu to see if All is a choice).

Installation of the printer driver is one process; ADDing the printer to the printer list is another, separate process, done after installing the driver.

- Need to add the caveat that I don't have the DX4800 - but I've described how it works for my 3 other Epson models.

Greg, I now have an Intel Mac and can confirm that this is not the correct process for Intel Macs and Epson printers. The Epson Intel drivers are structured a bit differently. The PPC drivers did require you to go to *More Printeers* and add using Epson USB. You then created a printer for each type/size of media you wanted to use.

With the Intel drivers, you click the Add icon, select the Epson (which is listed as a USB printer) and use *Print Using:* to select the Epson driver. Then click the Add button. With the Epson Intel drivers, you can use Page Setup to select the type and size of media you want to use. In other words, it acts just like a regular printer now. I was as surprised as anyone.

I have not yet had a chance to try the Epson Intel drivers (which are Universal Binaries) under Tiger on the PPC Mac.

I also can't print with an epson. Mine is Epson all-in-one 4200. What I have found out is that the os 10.4.10 has changed the way usb ports are identified and now the drivers from Epson will not work for this os. What happens with mine (and I see this with many other messages I've looked at), I can scan, so I know that the computer sees the usb connection. But when I go to print, I found that the computer can not recognize that the printer is connected. I get an error message that says "communication error, check connection"
I have emailed Epson. They gave me directions to download only the driver that was for the core duo. I downloaded the only drivers they had for intel-based mac and followed all their instructions until I reached directions that didn't fit what was happening I wrote them back again, quoting their message and letting them know where they were differing in their directions and what happened . I am waiting for a reply. I believe that the the driver that is supposed to work with 10.4.10 will not work to print. There needs to be some change. I hope this will not be the case for leopard. I notice that the epson 4200 does not appear in the list of printers on the computer for os 10.4.10, but it does appear for leopard. I hope that means that there is a new printer driver that works for leopard.
It is frustrating. I don't want to buy leopard yet.

I checked the apple site and as you say, your printer is not on the list of drivers supplied to apple.
I checked the epson site and do not find a driver for the DX4800 so you must be using another 4800 series driver possibly cx or pro.
They have a section labeled "Epson Support for the Intel-based Macintosh" which does not list the DX4800 as having a driver on their site.
I did find a driver at Gutenprint, for the DX4800, which is a universal driver, meaning it will run natively on your machine.
Gutenprint for Mac OS X
http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3
Leopard now includes Gutenprint.
