"There was an error joining the Airport network..."

I have a refurbished G3 iBook with a new Airport card; it senses the network running three other macs in my house, but every time I try to join this or any other network with the iBook I get the error message "there was an error joining the Airport network". I'm using a Belkin router; no problem with the other macs. Is there some simple control or setting I'm missing?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.10), Powerbook; G3 iBook

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.

Is the Belkin router wireless (I assume)?

Are the other three Macs using 802.11g, perhaps? If so, the Belkin may need to be set to both 802.11b/g (rather than 802.11g alone) for the benefit of the iBook (which is 802.11b).

Also, if you are attempting to use WPA2 encryption, that won't work with the iBook. It can use WPA, but not WPA2.
