Can I purchase a DVD ROM,DVD RECORDER drive for my wonderful Powermac 8600/300? Its running OS 9.2.2!

I believe it is possible to either get a SCSI DVD-ROM or burner but I'm not sure which name brands offer them. If you're willing to buy an add-in IDE PCI card that would be the best solution as then you'll be able to support the latest drives which support up to ATA-66/UDMA-66. Anybody have any suggestions for SCSI drives?

Can I purchase an internal DVD ROM drive for my PM 8600? If not what about a CD ROM burner?
I ment to put Power Mac not Perfroma sorry.
MWWD,
Your best bet is with an external drive. I used a Pioneer DVR103 with my 8500 running on firewire using a Sonnet Trio card in the Mac. It worked great with Toast.
As the Sonnet card also has an ATA channel, I could have installed the drive internally, replacing the SCSI CD reader. However, it was just less hassle to use the external option.
The Pioneer worked fine for Data discs, but the machine did not have the power to play a DVD movie.

I do only need the drive for data since I have plenty of DVD players! Just about everything made on disk is for DVD ROM. When I upgrade to OS X I will need DVD ROM. I have a HP external USB CD Burner but it doesnt seem to work on Mac. Is there anyway of getting this burner to work on my Mac for free? I dont have a firewire card on my PM only a USB card. How much are FW cards?
Thanks
Thanks

The best solution isn't freeware, it's Roxio's retail product "Toast." Version 5 or newer should support the USB burner. A good source for used copies of this software is eBay.

New FireWire cards can be purchased for as little as $20 (check out CompUSA's sale prices this week). You can find used ones for less at eBay, but by the time that you add shipping costs, you'd probably spend $20.
Before you start investing a lot of $$ trying to convert the 8600 into a more modern Mac, you should really consider saving your money for a used (Rev. 2) B&W G3 with a DVD-ROM drive. You'd have a fast 100 MHz system bus speed (twice the speed of the 8600's), ATA/IDE capability, built-in USB and FireWire, and native support for Panther or Tiger. Use/enjoy the 8600 for what it is - one of the best pre-G3 Macs made, but don't spend a lot of money on upgrade cards and/or SCSI peripherals to turbo-charge it. Anything beyond $25-$30 invested in an 8600 exceeds it market value, and the market for the resale of those upgrade components gets weaker every month, primarily because of one driving force - the newest incarnations of OS X that require a much more powerful computer.

I ordered one from Mac of All Trades. They were recommended by Low End Mac. Got a B&W G3 450MHz/9GB Drive/256MB mem/Keyboard/Mouse. It is a Rev 2. As soon as it arrives, I'll give my experiences if anyone is interested. $125 plus shipping (sorry if I broke a rule). I kept waiting for someone to give one up on Craigslist, but the best I saw was a PowerMac G3 Beige.
Low End Mac has seen some B&W G3s for less, but they sell fast!
It will replace my PowerMac7600/G3 250, which still works flawlessly, but is getting long in the tooth.
