I messed up, running Apple HD Setup and reformatting the hard drive of my Performa 600. I don't have the system install disks. I tried using disks from my old IISi but get a message saying "System 7.0.1 does not work on this model; you need a newer version." Now what do I do?

If you have access to another Mac with a floppy drive, download the
Network Access disk and make it into a bootable floppy. Once done, download and install
System 7.5 version 7.53 onto the Performa, using floppies to transport the files if necessary.

I tried to do this, but the Network Access disk download keeps coming up about 4 kb too big for a high-density floppy. I've tried reformatting the floppy without success. Any ideas how to get the file to fit on the floppy?
You can use a program such as Disk Copy to make the floppy image into a bootable floppy, or you can double-click the image and copy its contents to a floppy; the second option is easier if the machine you're making the floppy on is running Mac OS 9.22 or earlier. Dragging the downloaded file onto the floppy won't work, as an uncompressed floppy disk image contains its own set of directory data and other system-level items, which will make the image slightly too large to fit onto a floppy as is.

You can download Disk Copy at:

I would use 4.2

I would use 6.3.3 since it's the latest version and if you have problems with Disk Copy 6.3.3 it probably means the file you're trying to open is corrupt.
Disk copy 4.2 was able to fit Network Access onto one disk and this successfully booted the machine. I have installed 7.5.3 using the 19 part installation. Thanks for the help. Now...the CD player. I'm trying to load my Retrospect Express disk to try and restore some old back-ups. The disk drive doesn't seem to recognize the CD. When I run the Apple Music Player, it does recognize a music disk. Is there a CD driver I need?
You've got a slow (2x) CD-drive. Maybe your Retrospect Express disk has no ISO 9660 Standard. My 1x Apple CD accepts those disks(with OS 7.6).You should look after the standards your CD -Drive can read.
There should be a CD-ROM driver included with Mac OS 7.5.3 though I'd also recommend you update to Mac SO 7.5.5 via the free update Apple provides (it's also recommended by Apple to do so). Here's a link to a updated version of Apple's CD-ROM driver (newer than what Mac OS 7.5.3 or 7.5.5 include): http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Display-Per ipheral/CD-ROM/Apple_CD-ROM5.4.img.bin.
Your drive should recognise Audio-CD's.Even my 1x Apple CD-Drive recognises DATA-Disks made on a PC(tested on LC 475,OS 7.5,ISO 9660 Standard), and Audio-CD. Maybe your Retrospect Express Disk uses a standard not yet known with OS 7.5
I updated to 7.5.5 and installed Apple CD-ROM driver. The CD player still doesn't recognize the Retrospect Express CD. How do I tell what type of CD it is? How do I check whether the Performa CD player should be able to read this CD? I have burned a music CD with Toast which the player recognizes. If I try to make a disk copy of the Retrospect CD with Toast, would this be able to be played? Thanks for the outstanding help to date.
My guess if I had to make one would be that Restrospect Express's CD-ROM requires a newer and faster CD-ROM drive and maybe even a newer computer. Check Dantz's site to see what the software's system requirements are just to be on the safe side; you might not have new enough hardware for it to work right.
Hello Michael
Your Performa will not PLAY MP3.Look at:

Didn't try that yet!
IF you burn a CD you should use ISO 9660/slow speed.
My 1x CD Drive is able to read PC-CD burned with 52x speed nevertheless, I can copy files from there, but can't play them-only wav.files.
