Hey guys,
I have a macbook that i upgraded to Leopard and I have found that the boot up takes about 10-20 seconds longer than it used to with Tiger. When i start up, the screen is grey (with the apple logo), then it fade to a pale blue screen (with no status bar - just blank) and it stays like for about 10-15 seconds, then it cuts to my desktop, and everything is fine. I am only wondering of this prolonged boot up is normal?
Thanks,
-Steve
MacBook,
Mac OS X (10.5),
2gb ram, 80gb hdd, 2.0ghz intel core duo
I am having same problem with my new Macbook.
It was fine when I bought it but now I have the pale blue screen at startup for about 10 seconds and then starts up fine. Could it be a problem with one of the updates?
I have come to a solution! It is isn't pretty and it has been mentioned here before. I did a clean install (completely wiped my hard drive) and that fixed everything! Its not a happy resolution, but its a resolution none the less. -steve
Same problems as many others, Macbook, Leopard, slow boot times (well, mac slow, not windows slow) blue screen. Reset PRAM, etc...
I did a clean install the first time around and i am considering zeroing the drive and reinstalling again then pulling my home directory and applications from time machine or CCC.
After reinstalling Leopard using the "erase and install" method, my boot times have been cut in half, if not more. The whole OS operates more smoothly as well. I recommend that everyone that is having boot issues utilize the "erase and install" option and reinstall the OS.
I used the erase and install method and although this did speed up my boot time, i am still getting the blue screen. I moved over with migration assistant only my users, network, and user preference files. Could it be one of these files causing the blue screen? Should I do an erase and install and transfer nothing over?
I completely erased and installed everything on my Macbook and the blue screen was STILL appearing at startup. I have absolutely no idea what could be causing it. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
hi all,
for what its worth, i installed Leopard yesterday on my iMac Core Duo using the "upgrade" option and to be honest i was really disappointed with the overall speed. It seemed to be really sluggish, with the spinning beachball popping up all the time. Certainly, it was MUCH slower than Tiger for everything. This morning, i was doing some work on Word and got really fed up with the sluggishness and general unresponsiveness of everything so i made sure i had backups of my photos, documents, and music and did a clean install of Leopard using the "Erase and Install" method. I have to say that the speed difference is phenomenal. Everything is flying along now just like it used to under Tiger.
A cautionary note though. I didn't use the migration assistant though since it caused problems when i tried to copy over some stuff from my old ibook to my Macbook: it wouldn't go to sleep any more and changed the dock to the old Tiger variety etc. This time i just manually copied all my documents and reinstalled all the programs from scratch to the iMac.
I just my macbook in september 2007 and it was originally on tiger. It ran fine and perfectly well then. Then in december i erased and installed Leopard. it was fine at first. But now when i start up the white scren with the circular signal comes up followed by the blue screen with the mouse on top. The status bar doesn't come up anymore and it goes directly to the desktop. Now this is where it gets irritating. from the moment the desktop appears it takes 2 minutes before quicksilver "QS" sign shows up to indicate that it has completed startup.
This is irritating and it's becoming too much like windows. I've tried deleting caches and resetting my PRAM. looks like 10.5.1 is the one causing the problems.
My wallpaper comes up, and the dock does too, but then I have to wait a further 20 seconds before the menu bar appears at the top of the screen. Total boot time about 50 seconds.
A big let-down from Tiger in terms of boot speed. I have also noticed that opening folders, I have to wait longer before I see the contents appear. Other than that though, it has been absolutely fine 🙂 (Apart from some of the icons)
I did a clean install and didn't even migrate settings, just updated leopard. Installed apps one at a time, and updated each one before moving to the next.
My problem is not after the login (disabled automatic), but rather when first turned on. The grey screen with the spinning linux/mac dial thing. It stays for a really long time compared to Tiger.
I tried repairing permissions and there seems to be things that can't be repaired.. can someone comment on if they are important.
Thanks
Ed

It sounds like Leopard has issues with DiskUtility Repair Permissions in general. Perhaps there will be an update that will resolve this soon!
Have you tried booting from your install dvd and run repair permissions from disk utility on that?
(I'm not sure how important those messages are, however based on how it worked in Tiger, if you repaired permissions, that should fix any problems listded.)
