Airport Extreme (802.11n) - Connection drops (no auto-reset)

I have seen a few questions here about the Airport Extreme doing auto-restarts, but mine is just dropping off. It varies between only hours after the last reset to 1-2 days, but each time the Airport stops passing all traffic. I have the status light set to show traffic, and sometimes it's just a solid green and others it's actually off (no light). In either case the Airport stops passing traffic and I am not able to see it with the Airport utility. If I unplug it and plug it back in it works again. Any one else have this problem?

I encountered simular problems with 4 macbooks which were working fine with an airport extreme before upgrading them to Leopard. The situation was from one day to the other that only 2 could connect to the airport (1 was very good connected the other was very slow on internet). and 2 reported problems like time-out or password incorrect resulting in no connection with the airport and thus no internet. Sometimes the 2 would connect but the connection dropped after a minute or so. I tried upgrading to firmware 7.2.1 on the airport and i downgraded it to 7.2 again. I started experimenting with the airport settings. What worked for me was changing the channel setting from automatic (by default it would use channnel 11) to channel 4 (i checked the surrounding other wlan transmitters and this channel was free, maybe it might work setting an other channel in your situation) After doing that the 2 other macbooks connected seamlessly and had good speed on internet. This is how i solved the problem i hope it will help some of you guys.

Another "me too" post here. My brand new Airport Extreme drops the data stream at least twice a day. The light goes to solid green and the Mac reports that I have no connection to the Internet. I reboot the base station and it works right again for a while. I'm running the latest firmware and I'm using the base station along with an Airport Express to extend my network. My os is Leopard. Very frustrating.

I am SO relieved it's not just MY problem. From reading the length of this discussion, you'd think apple would be well aware of it and mac geniuses well-informed on this topic... all I've had so far are blank stares when I try to describe this problem, as though I'm the first person to ever have this problem.

But I digress. I wanted to say, I had this problem on my November 2006 MBP before installing Leopard. And I don't think it's at all related to torrent-downloading (sometimes the AEBS is running fine for days, while downloading a few files, and other times it's up and down like a fricken bloody yo-yo when all I'm doing is trying to surf the weather and send emails). Like everyone else, the only thing I can do when it goes down is power it down and then plug it back in again - when my MBP loses the connection with the AESB, the light on the AESB is still solid green as though nothing is wrong.

Tonight I found this article on the support site: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482 - it says that "After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.8, some Intel-based computers may not auto-connect to remembered networks that use WPA2 or WEP security. This article explains how to correct this behavior."

And I've just tried the instructions in this article. So far, so good, but I'm not holding my breath since sometimes the network will be fine for the better part of the week, and other times it needs to be reset 8 times in a single hour. I'm hoping this is it - I'm not a UNIX expert by a long shot, but I've heard that there are flaws with Finder and lost connections with peripheral devices, kernelling issues. So I'm hoping, fingers crossed, that this article is what we need.

I used http://www.istumbler.net to find a clear channel to use. Keep in mind that the best channel may not be adjacent to the first unused one since there is overlap in the frequencies used for each channel.

Having the same problem now. Happened Yesterday, Nov 11, 2007. The network just drops and the green LED is still on. I have 2 Macs and 2 PCs and Airport drops.. like 20 to 30 minutes. Today, it dropped twice. Only temporary fix is to unplug it/plug it back. I guess this unit is defective now. I'm going to Eatons Centre and get an exchange for this.

Mine does this too. It happens for me when using Airdisk to copy data. After a gig or two of files copied it just gives up. Does it every time. Very unreliable and frustrating. The log the base station keeps shows no entries.

This makes the thing pretty much a joke as far as I am concerned. You can share a disk as long as you don't access it much, then the whole base station and all its other functions are dead until unplugging it and plugging it back in.

It got WORSE with the 7.2 firmware line so I went back to 7.1. That speaks volumes.

Thanks. No, really. Thanks.

Thanks Mike

I downloaded iStumbler. It does provide useful info in problem solving. What I continue to find puzzling is why my dome extreme airports maintain a consistent connection to the net and send out a strong signal to where I'm working in the house. The new n level, square airport sends out a similar signal (on a variety of channels) but drops its connection to the net frequently. So often it is entirely disruptive of doing anything with the computers in the house.

So currently I continue to use the old airports since I have work to get done. And it turns out that running my iBook G4 and older domed airports as remotes with the new base station isn't appreciably faster than just using the domed g level airports. Or at least that is what I understand.

Me Too, but this is our setup.

All 10.4.10
30 clients on wireless.
2 Airport N, 10/100, not gig, configured so they are in a roaming configuration.

Randomly, every lunch time, they kick everyone off for 30 seconds, then let everyone back on again.

No status light, stays green all the time.
