Cable for Multiple Scan 1705 Display

The cable connecting the monitor to a Power Mac 7600 computer is lost. The computer manual calls it a Monitor Cable and the Monitor manual calls it a Display Cable. One end of the cable is 15 pins (7 row/8 row) and the other end is 15 pins (3 rows of 5 pins).

I have searched the internet and cannot find a replacement cable. Does anyone have any ideas where to find one and what the official name of this cable is when I am searching again?

Thanks
pat

Hi Pat,

My response is just based on your description of the connections, not a familiarity with your computer, so bear that in mind.

The old Mac standard video connection is DB-15 which is two rows of pins. PC (VGA) style monitors use three rows of pins called a HD-15 connector. You didn't mention what kind of monitor you have so I'm thinking it is a VGA monitor. If you use "HD15" and "DB15" as web search terms you will come up with lots of hits, which I'll let you browse through. You'll also have to figure out what you need in terms of male and female connections.

A slight word of caution. You may end up just getting a standard PC cable for your monitor and then using an adaptor to connect that to your Mac. This can be a bit tricky because not all adaptors seem to work with all monitors. Be prepared to try several until you get one that will work. I was lucky in the case of one manufacturer and they sent me a free adaptor, so check that out too.

Thanks Brian.
The name of the monitor is in the subject line of this post: Multiple Scan 1705 Display. Power Mac 7600
I used hd15-db15 as search terminology, and am still not sure of what I am finding. I found a likely candidate on Macmall site, but can't be sure if the pins are what I need: 3 rows of 5 pins on one end, and 2 rows (7+8) pins on the other. The MacMall salesman couldn't help me out either.
Would you mind going to this site and see if this is what I need?

Hi AppleIIFreak,
I checked the monitor--no adapter--it must be attached to the lost cable. I noticed you said you had one and was going to ask if you wanted to sell it, but then I noticed you are in Germany!!

Thanks for your input. I have the original manuals for the monitor and the computer and they each call that connector a different name: Display cable and monitor cable--neither of which can be used in a search on the web.

I guess I will order the one above and see if I can make it work.

With your cable(both sides male) you must have female connectors on both computer and monitor.Read the cited manual again-seems the monitor has a VGA-connector for PC(and used the adapter to connect with MAC!) I hope your cable will work-otherwise you can look at:

more for VGA:

Got my cable from USA-didn't even use it,monitor broke.
In Germany there is a MACtoVGA(you can use this for search) cable on ebay from time to time.
Good luck

Pat,

I must admit I'm confused by the "HDDB15M/HDDB15M" in the product description since it's not clear to me from that what the pin layout is.

It sounds like you have an old Mac (I'm not personally familiar with the 7600 but even early G3s take the 2 row) that needs the two row pin layout. You will need a cable with a male connector (pins sticking out) at that end.

You should look at the back of your monitor and see if the connection there looks like the one on the back of you computer. If it is, then you need a male connector at the other end too. If the monitor has pins sticking out then you need a female connector. Also check the pin layout to see if it is two rows or three rows. Looking at the picture in the manual that was referenced makes it seem like it is a male connector at each end.

Since it is an Apple monitor for an older computer I suspect it takes a DB-15 male connector at each end. In this case the adaptor converts the Apple standard cable to allow you to plug this monitor into a PC. This is a bit backwards from what I am used to seeing where people frequently have monitors built for PCs that they want to use with their Macs, so they need an adaptor to convert the three row arrangement to two rows. If it turns out that you need two rows for the monitor end and two for the Mac you have then you don't need any adaptor at all (unless you can only find a VGA 3 row style cable and then need an adaptor at each end, but let's not go there!).

Double check the pin layout with the sales person before ordering the cable you referenced. It refers to a "VGA" monitor cable which makes me think this is a standard PC three row cable which is not what you want. It's kind of hard to tell the pin arrangement from the photo.

Addendum
PM 7600 has Db-15 male-just as your cable(fits).Your ordered? cable has HD-15 male(VGA) on the other end(the piczure does not show that, but description). Your monitor should have HD-15 female, look for that at(picture 1) at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86504
IF it has such a connector it would fit ,too. Otherwise you would need a gender changer HD-15(cheap).
For both pinouts(VGA,DB 15) you may look at:
http://www.technick.net/public/code/cpdpage.php?aiocp_dp=pinconvidmacintosh
http://www.technick.net/public/code/cpdpage.php?aiocp_dp=pinconvid_vga15pin
All my MACs have DB-15 female.
You will see wether you get problems with resolutions.
Display/Monitor-cable is a DB-15 male on both ends-that's what I've got-and some adapters Mac/VGA
That's all from me-Good luck
PS:You can mail if needed.
