Plug the disk into the FW port. It should eventually show up on your desktop.
Then open the disk utility app, select that disk in the left window.
Then select the "Partition" tab.
You should see the existing partition on the left which will be one large one if the disk is new.
Just drag the horizontal bar with your mouse to where you want it.
Click Options and select GUID if it is not already selected.
Select the Format you want. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is what I have.
then just click Partition on the bottom of the right pane.
You might also name the disk at this time. The two partitions will be that name with an underscore for 1 and 2, as I recall.

Enjoy - piece of cake.

sorry for asking again, but then the other half will be ntfs, or i will have to do it somewhere else...
and in the extended journaled, would i be able to use it for timemachine?

You want half to be NTFS and the other half Mac?
I think for that you will need some 3rd party tools. AFAIK, when using DUapp, it's all one type, but I have never tried to change one of the two partition types, so I really don't know. Usually, when you click on a partition rather than the disk, in DUapp, the partition tab is not available.

In Tiger I used Disk Utility to partition an external hard disk into one Mac (~150Gb) and one MS-DOS (~10Gb) partition. This was so I can use the smaller partition with Windows PCs (the Mac partition is invisible to them). The type of partition was selected from a drop-down "format" list in Disk Utility when the partition was selected. I have not tried this with Leopard.
