Unable to Copy/Paste files in bulk in finder

I recently upgraded to 10.5. I want to re-install Leopard as a clean install, so I have some files to back up. If I select all the files and attempt to copy them to my external LACIE, i get the following error:
Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred.
(Error code 0)
If I copy the files individually, it works.
Any thoughts?
