Directory cannot be fixed by Techtool or Disk Warrior-What can I do?

Hello,

I ran Techtool to make some minor repairs to startup disk and now that partition is fuxed. Cannot start up from it and Disk Warrior cannot repair it. The error Disk Warrrior message is 3004,2176. What can I do to repair the directory or recover my data? Thanks.

Yes, not using the latest version of TechTool Deluxe or Tech Tool Pro on 10.4.10 can ruin the directory. You didn't say which you had, or I would have linked to it.
If you had a good cloned backup, you could Erase and Install and clone all your stuff back and be done.
TechToolPro has a data recovery option as does the new DiskWarrior.
Or you could try the free demo of DataRescuell .
If the demo "sees" your stuff, you can purchase the full version to rescue the bigger files.

Once you have what you need, you can Erase and Install and start over. Let us know if you need help with that!

If you can boot your computer into target firewire mode, AND the mac that you're booted to has as much available space as the dead drive, you can run this command from the terminal:
dd bs=512 if=/dev/disk3 of=/Volumes/YourHDName/Users/YourAccountName/Desktop/NameWhateverYouWant.dmg conv=noerror

(make sure the "disk3" is the correct disk number (found under system profiler)

This will create disk image of your entire hard drive where you should be able to get to all of your files.
It can take hours to finish.

Though the problem Meme encountered was caused by TechTool, there are other things to keep in mind, in general, when repairing a hard drive's directory:

When a drive has directory damage that can't be fixed, or not without undue effort, it's usually better to recover the drive's data to another drive, then erase the bad drive, do a clean reinstall of OS X, then copy the data back to the drive. So if the Diskwarrior people can't help, try the other suggestions here to recover the data to another drive.

You should also check your drive for bad blocks. Unfortunately, Diskwarrior can't do that, even though I've suggested they add that ability. Nor can Apple's Disk Utility. If your drive has bad blocks, even one, you should replace it instead of just zeroing its blocks, since too often I've seen bad blocks return later.
