iPhone Won't Ring, Delayed Voicemail Indication

Greetings.

I have replaced my iPhone once already. The last one had a strip of frozen pixels across the touchscreen. I have had this new iPhone for a few weeks now. I would guess that out of, say, 8 calls I actually get a ring on one of them? Most of the time I pick up the phone to check something else and get the "Missed Call" indicator. If the caller left me a voicemail it will not indicate for hours, sometimes days. If I turn the phone off and on I will get the voicemail to indicate once the phone has powered up. From a forum search I gather having my phone set to autocheck for e-mail every 15 minutes could be one reason I am missing calls. It seems a bit improbable that every call that comes through happens to be at the exact moment the phone is accessing Edge though. The voicemail issue baffles me.

The previous iPhone I had was set to check e-mail every 15 minutes and I did not have this problem. I got a ring on every call and voicemail indication was instant. My instinct is to call AT&T but I fear this may be an issue with the phone. Of course if I take it into the store everything will work perfectly.

Any ideas? Should I turn off e-mail autocheck?

Thanks.

I have been having the same issue described it this thread. I am on phone #3, and sim card #4. I have fiddled with this numerous times and came up with a bruised head from banging it against the wall. I use push with an exchange server, anyone else? For Shi** and giggles I turned off the push email. Viola, my phone now rings. Please, someone else try this and reply if it works. I smell an update..........

Update to my last post. 1 day and no missed phone calls. All of us heavy email users are now forced to make a choice, instant push email or a phone. This device does not do both.

In discussions with AT&T staff, they are all aware that both simultaneous EDGE and PHONE connections are impossible. Activesync on the Iphone keeps a persistent internet connection (drains the battery in under 2hours)and its impossible to get the call through it (Micro$soft conspiracy?). In 3G areas this isnt a problem since simultaneous connections are possible.

Does anyone else use Push email and not have a super quick battery drain because of the internet connection. None of my other devices have ever had this problem.

That depends on how serious of an issue you feel this to be. It certainly seems as though it does not perform as advertised. My Nokia E71 can ring when its in "push" mode. My HTC devices work as advertised as well. It seems that apple cannot figure out how to make push work.

I have set the "push" to off and have it check every half hour, that seems to be my workaround. Its not great but I really dont care to pursue other options. This is still the best device out there and I have tried them all. I may still make a change when we see what the newest version of Windows Mobile is like and what devices are available. I may even consider the rumored Zune phone.

I finally got to the bottom of this, although in my case it was a fairly specific problem. When I'm on call at work, our phone system takes the call and asks the user to input a PIN. It then forwards the call to my mobile and sends an email to me to verify. The issue is that my phone is not 3G so the email has to update over GPRS. Because I had push email on, the email was always being sent to the phone as the call came in and since you can't have a voice call in progress at the same time as GPRS, the call went straight to voicemail. If I turn push email off, it all works fine. I've not had a missed call now for a month.

I've been having the same problem. I didn't think to look on the web first, so I just went to the Apple store. At the store, they told me that my phone was broken (out of warranty), wasn't worth fixing, and I should buy a new phone and sign a new 2 year contract. Does this seem like Apple has given me a rather self-serving answer?

Anyways, can anyone else confirm whether the "turn push off" trick has worked for them (especially using a first generation iPhone)? If so, I'm going back to the store to return the new phone.

Also, if anyone from Apple would like to comment on this obviously pervasive problem, that would be great.

I have this issue also. When I talk to Apple, they say it must be the SIM or the network (I have talked to the Genius Bar and the phone support), but when I talk to AT&T, they run the network test and claim that the network is working fine in my geography (which is true since everything else on my phone works).

This issue only started to occur when 2.0 software was released. Something happened in that update where the "phone"/SMS (assuming the vmail is delivered via SMS like other phones) do not interrupt the data exchange from push email/safari/apps. It would seem like a simple software fix. Phone, vmail and SMS are immediate communications that should ALWAYS interrupt a data transfer (which can resume or happen after the phone/vmail/SMS).

Someone please help...it is killing me to miss 50% of my calls and not receive texts/vmails for hours...

I just had this issue with iPhone 3.0 on my 1st gen iPhone. The list of issues since i upgraded to 3.0 was more painful than beneficial. Only a couple are listed below.

1) Poor battery life (half day until fully depleted instead of full day with heavy phone and internet use.) This was even if i wasn't using it for phone calls. Considering i couldn't take calls, my use was limited (see my second point). Also the phone was stinking hot after 20 minutes of talking.

2) My phone would auto divert to voice mail since the upgrade. Now normally this takes a day or so to catch onto so in this case it took about 48 hours to really annoy me and i realised i had a an issue. Very weird circumstances....NB : Full reception at all times
• If i placed a call, i could then in turn receive the next incoming phone call.
• If i did not place the last call out, i would miss the call and get the "you had one missed call from 0418######. No voice mail message was left". I set this service up on my Optus account.
• Spoke to three optus techs and they were all amazing
• Optus deleted my voice mail account and tried to call......my voice mail then said i had my phone switched off.
• I replaced my sim card as directed - not fixed
• Called optus again, explained and they said they would update my carrier settings. No good.
• All along the way i restored the phone approx 8 times. I deleted the iPhone back ups, thecarrier settings and i even tried never connecting and syncing with a mac. In stead i just manually set up the phone and pushed the info across from my MobileMe account. Still no luck.

The conclusion......down graded to OS 2.2. battery life is back to a full day with heavy use. Phone works well again, no missed calls and i can sync my phone again.
The GUI is a little smoother again too - kinda sticky/smooth. I miss the cool new features, but lets face it......iPhone 1st gen is still great phone, even on 2.2.

Again, Optus were extremely helpful, but after working with them to fix this issue i personally feel that the first release of 3.0 is no good for the 1st gen. I'll wait for the second release of 3.0

Hope this helps someone out there.

I am experiencing the exact same problem after upgrading my 2g iPhone to the 3.0 firmware. HELP PLEASE !!

1. The iPhone cannot receive incoming calls once it enters standby for over a minute or two
2. Once the phone enters standby, it will neither ring nor vibrate
3. If I press the home button after the incoming call has ended, there will be a missed call notification, stamped with the time I pressed the home button (not when the call came in). Also, once the phone emerges from standby, queued voicemails and texts roll in, often from hours prior.
4. If I press the home button while the incoming call is ringing (on the caller's side), the iPhone will ring and vibrate immediately, no problem
5. Before the phone enters standby, there is no problem receiving incoming calls - the iPhone rings and vibrates just fine
6. When the phone is being charged, there is no problem receiving incoming calls - the iPhone rings and vibrates just fine

I have disabled push (with google contacts/calendars), push notifications, "reset all settings," restored the iPhone using a backup, restored the iPhone "as a new phone."

Everything except a jailbreak to install the program "insomnia," described in the link, here: http://themobileexperience.blogspot.com/2008/11/solution-to-iphone-wont-ring-pro blems.html

HELP, PLEASE !!
And thanks!

This suggests that the two problems (1) iPhone won't ring and (2) delayed voice mail indication might be separate issues:

AT&T network delaying iPhone voicemail alerts?
Wednesday, July 1, 2009 @ 5:05pm

Several reports suggest AT&T may be experiencing problems with delayed alerts for voicemail messages sent to iPhones. Tech support representatives provided more insight to Glenn Tenney, a computer security expert who recently noticed that many messages took days before being listed in the iPhone's visual voicemail.

"I just spent 1.5 hours on the phone with AT&T level 1, a supervisor, then level 2 support only to find out: Level 2 support tells me that this is a known issue, has been known since before the 3GS came out and potentially applies to all iPhones -- 1st generation iPhones with V2.x OS as well as 3G and 3GS phones and v3.x OS," says Tenney.

Despite the potentially large scope of the problem, the Level 2 representative claimed the only workaround requires dialing into the regular voicemail system to manually check for new messages.

Although similar problems can be expected to occur occasionally on most networks, it is unusual for the issues to last for an extended period of time. Aside from individual reports and experiences similar to Tenney's, the delays have not yet been confirmed or acknowledged by the carrier or Apple. via PCWorld

Outstanding answer. I've been tearing my hair out over this; even the stoopid jerk at the apple store didn't know anything ) except to tell me to "Man, just restore it, dude; that fixes almost everything." (but half those guys are complete morons who are stoned all the time.)

Thanks for pointing out the perfectly obvious. In the Navy, we'd usually say "In the event of equipment malfunction, first check to see if it's been turned on. That corrects many issues." In my meager defense, I have my phone in a rubber case, and that little button is obscured.
