Black border around dialog box, buttons, and everywhere

This problem started suddenly when my cat walked on the keyboard. Apparently cmd-F5 toggles VoiceOver, and so I have disabled that in Keyboard Preferences.

Just wanted to say thanks for this tip. I started having the black border problem this morning, and it was driving me crazy. After finding your note, I went to the Voiceover Utility, and sure enough, it was on. Then I remembered accidentally hitting Command-F5 earlier in the day, and realized the connection.

So, just confirming that this does work - at least it worked for me. The black borders are now gone.

There are known graphic issues with the Mac Pro. Search the Leopard forum.

I think the issue is caused by the Apple Voiceover Utility. Part of its function for the visually impaired is to highlight the button or text item that it is going to speak. i suggest you turn off Voice over either going to System Preferences -> Universal Access and Making sure that voiceover is turned off. Alternatively press Apple(Command) F5 to turn it on & off. The black rectangles should go away. If you want voiceover but not the black rectangles. You can open the voice over utility and change the settings to the text is still spoken but without the highlighting.
