I have searched everywhere for help with drivers including Logitech, Apple Forums, Web and have found nothing. I have a Logitech QuickCam® Communicate™ I was running it on a Windows machine; I would like to use it with my new Mac mini that I just upgraded to Leopard, I bought it on the 16th of October with Tiger pre-installed (the Logitech Mac drivers v.8.0.1 did not work with Tiger either).
If you haven't come across it already, you might try Macam (
http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/). This software is not yet re-written for Leopard, but it may work, and supports a wide range of USB webcams, including many Logitech models.
I have the quickcam zoom (released 2006) and I installed the drivers which came on the CD with the camera. They worked fine on my G4 mini with Tiger. When I upgraded (not a clean install but I just rectified that mistake :/) the camera was still working with Yahoo Messenger.
Now I have the clean Leopard install I have to find the CD again and see if they are OK. I will post results later.
I am also having issues with the Logitech Quickcam on a mac mini running Leopard. Skype recognizes the video (using macam) and audio, but after about 10 minutes the audio goes to white noise static and will not work again unless unplugged and re-plugged. It works fine on my XP machine.
Update, I installed macam on Leopard (I had tried this with Tiger, but, it did not work); this time I get great video, but, no audio. It was definitely a step in the right direction...
Anyone has this happen to them? Or better yet, anyone know of a way to get both audio and video out of the Logitech Quickcam Communicator STX?
Did it ever work at all? I'm just trying to see if the Logitech software ruined it for me. When I originally tried to install this camera, I tried using the Logitech software and drivers vs. 8.0.2 for Mac OS X 10.3 or latter that came with the camera (Silly me). It never worked, so I uninstalled it and then tried the macam software. This was all under Tiger.
I have tried a Logitech Quickcam STX and Logitech Quickcam Messanger with macam only (Logitech does not provide mac os software for these models) and both have the audio issue after a few minutes of active use on skype.
macam and Ecamm iChatUSBCam
http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/. The one trick that closed the loop, to make my audio and video work was to select "Unknown USB Input Devise" as my microphone. This combination works in iChat and Skype. By the way the Ecamm software costs $9.99 (Well worth it); they offer a demo download in order to ensure that the product will work for you.
macam and iChatUSBCam from Ecamm solved this issue. My microphone was not recognized, but, selecting "Unknown USB Input Devise" in System Preferences took care of that issue.
"Unknown USB Audio Device"
is the built-in microphone within the webcam.
Also, for other Mac users looking into getting a webcam for their Mac mini/Pro: Any UVC-compliant (USB Video Class) such as the Logitech Ultra Vision will work with the Mac. Also, the XBox 360 USB camera with work with your Mac as well, since it is also a USB Video Class device.
For good sound quality, I recommend one of Logitech's USB microphones. The sound quality is excellent. The Griffin iMic is also very nice for working with older 3.5mm-jack microphones that require a mic input.
I have a logitech quickcam ultravision. I connect it to the macmini but nothing happen except the microphone is working. Do I have to do something to make it recognise by the mac%
Thanks
Ive got the same problem with a Logitech Communicate STX. Skype give me sound, but no picture. But when I just run it on the Macam supplied viewer (you know the one, the one where you can watch yourself, but it doesnt do much else) I get picture, but no sound.
I found the answer on another discussion forum (THANKS JAN!!!) What you have to do is make sure that the "macam.component" is in the QUICKTIME folder in your LIBRARY folder on your HD. Once it is......... no problems.
I'm wondering what the status of Logitech support for Mac is now. In the Apple Store in Troy, a Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision MP (there may be the words "Special Edition" in there too, I'll have to check) is being sold, with a Mac approval logo on it. It is being sold as being for Mac.
I can find no mention of this edition of the camera on the Logitech site, and only one on Apple Store website. I need to check and see if it has any special software to work with the Mac.
I have seen other mentions of Logitech web cameras working on the Mac, at the Logitech site; they say it will have basic features provided by the native OS X driver for webcams--sight and sound--but not any of the advanced features, like RightLight 2, RightSound, face tracking, and video effects.
So I would wonder if there's really anything different about the "Made for Mac" camera and the Windows camera. My bet is that there isn't. (The Apple Store has the black SE version of the camera hardware; the white and silver QuickCam Ultra Vision and the black SE are the same in specs, I believe they're identical save for the cosmetics.)
I got, opened, and installed a Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision. It is not the package sold in the Apple Store; this I got from Amazon, and it is not the black SE but the ivory and pewter version. I believe the hardware all to be the same--the Ultra Vision and Ultra Vision SE for Windows, and the Ultra Vision MP for Mac--except for the color of the exterior finish.
The one I opened included software for Windows. The Apple Store online description of the Ultra Vision SE (curiously, the MP is not the one listed--I think it's the same) says that the contents of the box are the camera and a quick start guide--no software included at all.
The camera does work, in Leopard 10.5.1, right out of the box, in iChat and Photo Booth; it does not work in iMovie, which requires either the built-in iSight cameras in current Macs or a Firewire camera connection. It also works in Skype; I have not tried AIM, MSN Msgr or Yahoo Msgr.
The functions are a bit attenuated because I am using a G5 Mac; therefore the video effects are limited to the first two of the three or four panels usually present in today's Macs. No backdrop effects in iChat, for example. However, third-party special effects do work in some (not all) cases.
Also, none of the special Logitech features work: No RightLight2, no face tracking, no Logitech video effects, and probably (untested) no RightSound; also no snapshot button function.
I have not tested the microphone in any app yet since I have no occasion to talk to anyone yet. However, in System Preferences/Sound, it does seem to work.
Bearing in mind that I tested it in a room with very low light, and that light across the room from me, and at night, I'd say the quality of the image wasn't great. It would probably be better with more light (the RightLight2 feature doesn't work, remember). The quality differs between iChat and Photo Booth; Photo Booth color seems somewhat better to me.
