Most e-mail providers will have a section on their website describing exactly what you need.

E-mail is generally connected via either POP access or IMAP access and iPhone supports both of these standards. If an e-mail provider supports one of these methods they will document how to connect in the help section of their website.

Keep in mind that not all e-mail providers provide this access, but chances are good if you're able to connect using Outlook Express.

I don't have a RoadRunner account, but I believe you can login here ( http://webmail.roadrunner.com/) and then click on the Help section.

http://www.sc.rr.com/rrhelp/email.htm has instructions of how to setup Outlook Express.

While the screen shots you don't need since it is describing outlook, the information there is what you need.

Mainly need the incoming and outgoing settings. Then you put those into the iPhone settings for setting up a new pop mail account. Pretty much look at the settings in the last screen shot.

I, too use roadrunner and found this answer when I Googled for it yesterday. I have had limited success, but plan on contacting AT&T as they helped me configure my Cingular 8525 when the "typical" settings were of no use. Link:

Unfortunately tWC is quite adimant about not allowing outgoing mail from off the Roadrunner network. So you cannot use the same settings as you would at home…

(for those following, that would be SMTP.NYC.RR.com)

Also unfortunately, ATT will not allow anyone to use the CWMX.com server off the EDGE network.

What does this mean? You should use the cwmx.com server as much as possible, but it means that if you are off the edge network (on wifi) at that exact moment, your mail will not go out. Once you get off wifi (manually, or leave the range of the hotspot) your mail will send out.

Another way to do this would be to forward your email to Google.com. Google’s interface is free, connects just fine, and will hold EVERY email there until you delete it. So you could forward your email to the gmail server, checking the setting to leave copy of mail in your roadrunner account. This will send a copy of the mail to Google while leaving a copy at home.

Setting up incoming pop email from Road Runner to iPhone is straightforward.

Setting up outgoing email is not.

In general, Road Runner requires that you be connected to their network through one of their cable modems in order to use their outgoing SMTP server. Since, an iPhone will never be connected this way, you need to find an alternate way.

There are at least three ways I know of:
1) Send your outgoing mail through Cingular or AT&T's smtp server. This works and is no extra charge, but it has the disadvantage that it only works through the slower EDGE network - not through WIFI.
2) I understand that Google offers free email, and through their free email, you can use their outgoing SMTP servers for your RR account.
3) You can sign up with an outgoing SMTP service like www.authsmtp.com. I use this method. It costs about $25 per year. Your outgoing email works through both EDGE and wifi, and it appears to the recipient as if it came directly from RR.

I recommend either option 2 or 3. The google way is more for a do-it-yourselfer. The authsmtp way is a paid service, so there are good instructions and support. I have several months left with authsmtp, but at some point I may switch to Google.

AppleMan1958, can you plese explain option 2 in more detail. I have a gmail account and a road runner account.

I just figured out how to forward mail from road runner to gmail. This is how I did it.:

Logon to the road runner from their website

Click the setting button

Under the heading Mail Management, there is the forwarding feature. I chose the forward and keep a copy option, so I would have a copy on my home computer.

The copy of the sent message will be on your gmail account.

When I used Google I could not make users see the mail as coming from my Roadrunner acct.

Added plus is that I can now use my RR account on my laptop when traveling and not connected at home -- vs. webmail.

If I'm using both my laptop and iPod on my home wireless network, as well as when traveling on the road, is there an easy way to switch between who is the outgoing server when using a service like authsmtp?

No but if you are using the authsmtp service, just use this SMTP server full time which is hidden to all recipients.

This is partially wrong. We can send email, via our iPhones and RoadRunner accounts , all day long when at home. We have a hybrid wired, and wireless, network, wherein our iPhones connect to RoadRunner via an Airport, which is in turn connected to our RoadRunner Premium account via a wired router and cable modem. Likewise, we can also send email direct from our RoadRunner email accounts anytime we are connected to a WiFi network that is directly connected to RoadRunner (as is the case with many friends, family, and local businesses.)

As was previously mentioned, we use "authsmtp" to send outgoing RoadRunner mail via Edge or other non-RoadRunner Wifi networks.

This is not a RR requirement. This depends on the ISP's restrictions used for connecting to the internet if other than RR. Most if not all ISPs block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network unless the SMTP server is authenticated but some block its use regardless. If I'm connected to the internet via another ISP besides RR and they allow the use of a non-authenticated SMTP server that is outside of their network when using 587 instead of 25 for the SMTP server port, I'm good to go - RR won't prevent this but if RR has an authenticated SMTP server I'd be good to go regardless unless I happen to be connected to an ISP that blocks the use of all SMTP servers that are outside of their network - non-authenticated or authenticated which isn't common.

For what it's worth I just talked to Road Runner tech support, and the guy said there is no way to send mail if you're not on the RoadRunner network. i.e. from a hotel, etc. His suggestion was to, drumroll please, use webmail.

I'm a Time Warner/RR customer and I quit using my RR email account some time ago for this very reason but there can be a way depending on the ISP used for connecting to the internet. Some block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network on Port 25 only so using 587 for the server port with RR's SMTP server can or may work in this situation but if RR supported an authenticated SMTP server, then there would be few if any problems regardless where and how you are connected to the internet.

I decided to quit using my ISP's email account as my primary email account in case I move or decide to change ISPs. My primary account is my .Mac account which is not ISP dependent and has an authenticated SMTP server. I've never had any problems sending messages with my .Mac account regardless the ISP used for connecting to the internet. Gmail has an authenticated SMTP server, can now be accessed as an IMAP or POP account with any email client, has a good spam filter at the incoming mail server, is not ISP dependent and is free.
