Hi every one,
I'got the same problem as you. Just "touch" my new ipod 16Go and after the update propose by Apple (1.1.2) the system refuse the update and propose to come back with teh restore option and now I'm in the "middle of the bridge", nothing works. The ipod touch propose only the view of the image for the USB connection. A "good" start for this device... Please helps if you find the glue to solve this!

I am attempting to restore my iPod touch (based on advice in another posting since iTunes refused to recognize the touch) and get a 'The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1604)'. On another attempt in my admin account I get an -50 error. Another attmept gets the 1606 error.

Now everytime I connect to iTunes I'm greeted with the message: "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." But the restore always fails. Why? And the touch now only shows the apple logo with an icon of a music disk with sync cable below.

My restore problems were fixed by this document: Error 1604 When restoring iPhone in iTunes. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307007

Basically, I removed all USB devices and connected the iPod touch to the port in the back of the computer. The restore then completed successfully and my iPod seems to be alive in iTunes.

By the way Apple's useful Knowledge Base can be searched here: http://search.info.apple.com/
