D-Link DWL-122 USB Wireless Adapter

I have a D-Link USB Wireless adapter DWL-122 that continually 'freezes' the GUI and requires a hard reboot. I only seem to get about 2 to 5 mins worth of web browsing before this happens in either Safari or IE.

This has problem has existed for a while and can be replicated both on a B&W G3 and a Dual USB iBook and happens when connecting to Airport Extreme BAse Station, Airport Card, US Robotics 8045G Wireless Acess Point.

This also has happened under 10.2.7, 10.2.8, 10.3 and 10.3.1.

I have contacted D-Link who sent me another unit with the same problem. They also emailed me new drivers 1.3.2 (have been using 1.3.1) with no sucess.

Does anyone else have the same problem or any solution to get this device to work?

Funny i think i have a similar problem. i get more than 4 minutes of browsing but on average i tend to have to reboot at once once a day if not more. when i reboot i then have to pull out the usb cable and replug it in to get the connection.

suspect there must be a compatability problem with the mac but not sure if one can do anything about it?

any thoughs out there?

Using the internal AirPort card is always the most compatible and easiest solution.

The AirPort card is based on IEEE-802.11b. The AirPort Extreme card is based on IEEE-802.11g. IEEE-802.11g is backward compatible with IEEE-802.11b.

The AirPort cards will work with other IEEE-802.11b or IEEE-802.11g compliant equipment.

I had this same problem... unfortunately, it seems to be endemic to the equipment (iow it's the driver not osx)... there's actually a petition floating around the web to get dlink to rewrite it's driver... linked somewhere here:
http://www.randyrants.com/archives/000224.asp

Something about the driver causes a kernel panic after >10 minutes continuous use, less if you are using more applications that access it...dangerous for the system. Buy an airport card and be done with it.

I now purchased an airport card, and have it working with a linksys 11b router. Haven't had a single issue since.

I bought the following setup from Buy.com.
This was very much plug and play for me on my g4.
Using it now and it surfs apparently quicker than if I was direct wired to my cable modem (go figure).
Machine Model: PowerBook G4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (11.3)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 500 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 512 MB

I was going to buy the DWL-122 about a week ago, until reading the cases here, I was quite surprised at this, so I decided to email D-Link, explaining that I currently use WinXP but am going to switch to Mac, and that I'd heard numerous stories here. This is the reply I received this morning, (watch out v.long 🙂

Macintosh Requirements:
* A power Mac G3 or G4, iBook, or PowerBook (post PowerBook G3) with at least 128MB of RAM.
* 802.11b compatible Access Point (for Infrastructure mode) or another 802.11b wireless adapter (for Ad-Hoc; Peer-to-Peer networking mode).
* Properly installed and working USB Controller.

Some installations of this adapter in MAC OS X does have conflicts that are usually resolved following the instructions below.

If the DWL-122 is not working properly in Mac OS 10.2.6 make sure you have the latest driver update for your USB Controller. Also check for any system updates using the Macintosh "Software Update" in the System Preferences menu. If you are still having trouble please respond with the following information.

I got another e-mail from D-Link:

The DWL-122, with the latest drivers, will work with Mac OS X (10.2.x and 10.3.2).
You can download the latest drivers at http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DWL%2D122.

Is This old news, or can someone try it to see if it works?

I scrapped my DWL-122 usb adapter due to the problems noted above. i have all of the updates and it froze the system at least 3-4 times per day.

I switched to an airport card which works fine with DI-514 wireless router but is very slow--in fact a lot slower than the PC which is in the same room running XP and using DWL-122 USB adapter.

I have no idea why the airport slows things down but it does but i do know that the DWl-122 doesnt work with the Mac.

go figure...

We've got a D-Link DWL-122 USB Wireless Adapter and have finally managed to get it to work (including after sleep, restart and shut down!!).

We're using the following setup: iMac DVSE 400MHz, 640MB Ram & Mac OS 10.3.3

Our vendor contacted D-Link and got hold of a updated driver (currently not available on their website) v. 1.4.5 which solved our issues surrounding the device not being recognised by the D-Link software.

However, we still had issues with our WEP key not being recognised, and having to go into the D-Link software to manually click 'connect' (which then connected fine). In a blind of inspiration, I manually set up the network details rather than using DHCP and this has appeared to fix everything.

Currently, I've being running okay since yesterday, including several restarts and shut downs. I'm not sure if the D-Link is responsible for several apps requiring a forced restart, or just that I'm trying to run 10.3.3 on a 400MHz processor!

Still it's better than the position last week when we had no connection!

Good luck getting this to work if you've bought one - otherwise, I would recommend saving up your cash and purchasing an AirPort card if you can!
