I have been able to open old app data files in Notepad and other simple text editors, and recovered the main text. How well this process works depends on whether the creating app used file compress or not.
How to read/open/translate Macwrite Pro 1.5v3 files on OSX.1? Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Don't remember much about the app, but if you can convert to files to text format or rtf format, you can read them with most text editors.

Welcome to discussion.
You can use ClarisWorks 5.0 to open MacwritePr1.x documents.
You can try MacLinkPlus also.
Quoted
"Yes - AppleWorks 5.x documents are directly openable in AppleWorks 6.x without the need for an additional translater utility.
The initial versions of AW 6, those prior to v. 6.1.2, would not work with MacLinkPlus. I would use AW 5 plus MacLinkPlus to open foreign documents (such as Word files) and convert them to AW 5 files; I could then open those in AW 6.
AW 6.1.2 and later versions can use MacLinkPlus - it is an excellent utility software to have installed."

I too have many files still in 'MacWrite' format (dating back to 1992) and would like to recover some of them to 'AppleWorks 6.2.9' but have been unable to do so in 'OS 9 Classic' or 'OS X 10.4.2'.
'TextEdit 1.4' & 'MacLinkPlus Deluxe 15.0' do not produce any results.
Any help would be appreciated.

Clarisworks 5.0 also can open MacWrite 5.0 and MacWrite II.You may look for Appleworks 5.0 also(at appleworks board!).Appleworks 5 docs can be opened with AW 6.
Good luck

I have some ClarisWorks files that my OS X 10.4.2 cannot translate. What can I do? Is there a software program I could get to translate?
Simple! Buy Appleworks 6.
Thank you, Miles. I live 235 miles from the nearest Apple Dealer so I couldn't go into the store and ask. I've tried to figure out what program I could use with no luck (I'm really not very computer literate and it has been a stretch for me to figure out how to use the Apple Discussion system).
You could buy it from the online apple store.

You should ask for AppleWorks 6.1.2.Look at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25300
This version comes with translators(MacLinkPlus from DataViz).
I think AW 6.0 didn't come with this translator. You may look at the Appleworks-Forum for more details.
