I am also having difficulty getting my touch to show in iTunes or showing as a USB device or in My Computer. Using the same USB port and same cable my iPod nano works fine and is recognized in iTunes.
I have reinstalled iTunes, check and rechecked Article: 61711 and Article: 306640 to no avail and plugged into every USB port I have. The iPod touch does work on a friends computer so something is amiss in my computer but what? (Note my friends computer seems to think the touch is a camera.)
Very frustrated and anxiously await some advice.
I have exactly the same problem as the above chap. I also cant get into the store when I'm on my Itunes screen,it says that there is problems connecting. I have turned off any firewalls etc.but still no store.
Please someone help or this thing is exiting the nearest window !!!

Ok people after messing up three days with my jailbroken ipod touch cauze my itunes didn't recognize it i figured out that the problem is first windows recognized it as a imaging device o as a camera, i found in the device manager was listed mi apple ipod under portable devices and there was the problem it has to be listed under universal serial bus controllers named as a apple ipod so this is what i did but first make sure u have correctly installed itunes and the apple mobile device support:
1 open the device manager or windows button + r is run and then type devmgmt.msc
2 look for the portable devices and find the apple ipod or wherever that is listed on your pc.
3 once u find the apple ipod do a right click on it and click on uptade driver software
4 take the manualy opcion or browse on my computer and then look for this folder on your computer C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
there should be the driver that itunes recognize and your windows wont recognize your ipod as a camera again but i repeat u have to make sure u have installed the apple mobile device support u can get it by extracting the itunes+quicktime package using winrar. so click on update or next what ever on the update process and next time itunes will open your ipod for sincying thanks to forums ilounge.com
u dont need to switch usb ports is anyone has questions about ipod touch in general or itunes please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com
there is a comunity for free sftware wich i'm on it and is for helping people i had the same problems and with itunes and the rolling back installation of the apple mobile device support so i hope u solve your problems
My problems seem to be solved by first restoring the iPod. (Shut it off -- press sleep/wake + slide to power off -- then, open iTunes, press and hold the "Home" button and connect it to the computer while pressing and holding Home.)
The restore completed successfully but only when I consulted the document "Error 1604 When restoring iPhone in iTunes" (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307007). Basically I had to disconnect my USB devices and connect the iPod to a port in the back of the computer. Once restored the iPod was recognized in iTunes. I reconnected all my USB devices and -- viola -- the iPod touch seems to be alive and recognized by iTunes.
Time for a glass of wine (and some music)!
