Option return should do the trick.

I followed your advice to the letter....nothing. Quit Numbers and reopened file to try again....nothing. Do you know if there might be any issues with latest Leopard update (10.5.2) and Numbers 1.0.2? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I followed the advice to the letter and, even with 10.5.2 and Numbers 1.0.2 the line break was correctly inserted in the cell.

Try to

quit and close the app
trash its preferences file:

<bootVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Numbers.pli st

empty the trash
restart the app.

If the oddity persists, try to run Numbers from an other user account.

My guess it that maybe you installed a third party extension which wrongly plays the game and introduced an anomaly in the events queue.

My old pal always used to tell me, "Never overlook the obvious." And that's exactly what I had been doing. I was entering the Option + Return key combination in the formula line at the top of the page rather than in the cell itself - - Duh!

I guess that I could blame it on years of working in Excel, but man, it's my own stupid fault.

I appreciate your willingness to help, Yvan, and all the advice you've given. I'll tuck that bit of info about tossing the .plist into the trash and write that down for safekeeping - - that's some good stuff.

I'm using the trial version of numbers. Using control-return does not create a soft return within the cell. What am I doing wrong?

Use Option + return, not Control. They are two different keys.
