Mail.app and RSS Authentication

I am working on a project team using Basecamp ( http://www.basecamphq.com/). One of the options Basecamp offers is an RSS feed of changes and posts. I thought I would use the RSS feed option in Mail.app to read this feed, but because it requires authentication (login/password) I can't seem to get it to work.

Does Mail.app officially support RSS Authentication? If so, how do I get it to work, if not is there a work-around that anyone has found?

Thanks!

The trick I found is getting the authentication information into your keychain.

You can open Keychain Access and add it yourself, but the easiest way is to set Safari as your default RSS reader, open the RSS feed with Safari, and when you enter the username and password tell it to add it to your keychain.

Then go ahead and add the feed to Mail (note the link in Safari to do this doesn't work), and give it permanent access to the keychain entry. Everything should now be good to go.

Obviously the real solution here would be for Mail to offer a username/password dialog, since the current method is identical to Internet Explorer/Outlook—never a desirable comparison. But for now that should do you.

Glad to hear.

I couldn't get the link to open in Safari without setting Safari as my default reader; if I entered the feed address in the address bar in Safari, it opened in Mail immediately.

Whereas with Safari as the default reader, the feeds still open in Mail if I enter the URL into Mail.

How did you manage to open the feed directly in Safari while leaving Mail as the default reader?
