2.8Ghz 24" iMac Game Play Performance

A couple of weeks ago I purchased the 24" 2.8Ghz iMac and have noticed that the game performance is not very good. I've been playing WOW and the graphics are choppy and play is sluggish. I've tried all the different settings and haven't been able to improve it. DVDs played in full screen seem to be choppy as well. I was wondering if others have experienced the same thing. I hate to say it but I also have an AMD 64 system that is coming up on two years old and at the same resolution it beats my new iMac hands down in game play and video. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the reply. I don't have anything running. I installed World of Warcraft basically right out of the box. I love Apple but it doesn't look like they've put a lot of effort into the gaming community. Even looking at the Mac Pro there are only a couple of graphic card options and they are old when considering graphic card evolution. The aluminum iMac is only a couple of months old and it comes with the HD 2600 which is rapidly headed towards the low end value market. ATI is already in the 3800 series (HD 3850 & 3870) and NVIDIA is in the 8800 series. Neither of these series are supported on the Mac Pro to the best of my knowledge. My wish would be that Apple give us gamers a little more attention. It's a big market and worth the effort. Sadly for now it looks like my beautiful iMac will have to be delegated to work detail (word processing, e-mail, finances, etc.) and my XP system will be for fun and games. (Wow! That's a reverse on the PC vs. Mac commercials.) Thanks!

Interesting. While gaming has never been Mac's strong point, it is entirely unacceptable that a full-screen dvd should be choppy - in fact this indicates a problem of some sorts in your machine - even my iBook 1ghz runs DVDs immaculately. I would call apple on this one as it isn't right.

Also, I recommend you go to youtube and hit a search: "24 inch imac games" and you'll find that several users have posted videos of their aluminium iMacs running Quake 4, Counter Strike, Medal of Honor AIrborne, Battlefield 2142, and Bioshock at very impressive frame rates. It seems you'll have to perhaps sacrifice full resolution, but these games look to be running with hardly any chop at all. I think you have some kind of issue with your machine, it should be doing better.
