Kirk; its not solved by downloading a new QT installer. And it does not matter if you co-install iTunes or not. I have the same exact problem and its not described anywhere that I can find. It occurs when you visit a website that has a QT applet (yes, even the Apple QT site) but many commercial sites use this. If you select "update" you get the error message and i.e. explorer crashes. It also happens when trying to install kid games that use QT- really big fun crashes.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled QT and spent a lot of time on trying to fix this. I also explored a possible problem with corruption of the microsoft installer that is described on the MS website, but I have not been able to get any better results after replacing it. None of my other PCs have this problem.

Now that I see somebody else has the issue perhaps Apple will address it.

Not clear why you've tagged on to this thread and not posted a new question with your trouble.
QuickTime doesn't do "applets". They are Java files and require a different software app to view on open them.
Third party software (your "games") most often do not recognize the installed version of QuickTime found on your machine and, instead, try to install older (out of date) versions on it. That will fail and also cause issues.
That none of your PC's have issues further points the finger at those third party software apps or the version of QuickTime found on them.
Give some more details so we an help sort out your real issue.

This also happened to me after I installed an old game disc for my son. I removed the game then removed and re-installed quick time and i tunes and I cannot get rid of the message. If I click cancel instead of update, my computer doesn't crash. How do I get rid of the error message?
