Widget on main screen

Is there a way to have widgets on the main screen so that you can view them while you're working on an active program? For example I'd like to have a headline news service widget active and viewable while I'm working on a spreadsheet.

Thanks,

Launch Terminal (/Applications/Utilities); then type "*defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES*". Log out and then log back in, and you’ll be able to pull as many widgets into the Finder layer as you like. While dragging the widget from the Widget bar, press F12 to close Dashboard. When you release the mouse, the widget will appear on the desktop

I have a related question. I've googled this and searched the discussion boards and I don't believe it has been asked. Anyway....

I understand the usage of the devmode of dashboard to pull widgets onto the desktop. What I haven't seen mentioned is why this has to be global (in regards to Spaces). I was really hoping to create a space that would be nothing but permanent widgets. That way, I could have all my schoolwork up on the main Space, iTunes in another, and all the random crap that widgets are useful for occupying a third space.

Is this possible, to target a permanent widget to a particular space? Any help would be appreciated.
