iPhone use with Dension ICE>Link WARNING!!!

Hi.
I have an email from Dension support, as I enquired if/when they would have support for the iPhone.
They returned this email:

Our products could not yet be made compatible with iPhone.
Info about compatibility with the new iPods, about new firmwares and cradles will be posted on our homepage at the beginning of next week if testing of the new iPods is finished.
In the meantime, please do not use your iPhone with the ice>Link Plus. Last week I got the following info about iPhone from our developers: "Unknown charging specification, risk to damage iPhone"

If you have further questions, please feel free to contact us again.

Best regards,
Dension Support Team

So be warned, I have been using mine in the UK, but will refrain for now.

Like the poster below I have used my new iPhone with my Dension. The main problem seems to be maintaining the connection between the iPhone and the plug in the cradle. The iPhone is considerably slimmer than my previous iPod (5th gen), and by rocking the iPhone forwards, and putting something - a piece of polystyrene for instance behind the iPhone - I can hear the output through the car stereo. If I let it alone, however, it disconnects and the sound comes out of the iPhone speaker.

Then, when I reconnect the iPod video, I get the interesting message that the Dension is not compatible with the 5th Gen iPod! It has been for 2 years so far...

Have I damaged the Dension by using the iPhone, I wonder? Either physically - with all the rocking - or electronically, in that it needs some sort of firmware update? What do you think?

You know...
I posted the information to help people protect their iphone from Damage.
yes the iphone works in the Ice>LINK to an extent, BUT, and here is the BIG BUT.....

IT HAS NOT BEEN TESTED WITH THE IPHONE AND THERE HAVE BEEN CASES OF IRREPARABLE DAMAGE TO THE IPHONE

IF you choose to ignore the advice of Dension - then good luck to you. I hope your iPhone survives.
It does not fit correctly - there is movement due to the slimness of the phone in the cradle.
It does not display the track information like a regular iPod "Classic"

Please people - do yourself a favour and wait until Dension have confirmed that all is ok, and that it is safe to use.

I have been using the iPhone with my icelink (not sure of the version) since the day the phone was released (june 29).

It works great for me -- starts playing when i select it on the headunit, it charges, and have not had any problems with it...

My bigger concern comes with wanting to get an iPod Classic and the incompatibility issues with that model (so i've read) and the ice>link.

Still no compatibility listings on Dension's page -- i may call them today.

Hi Everyone!

Just received this e-mail from Dension saying that the iPhone CAN be plugged in an

ice-Link Plus without danger.

Here are the e-mails...

Hi,

this is safe to connect iPhone to ice>Link Plus. There are few
operational incompatibilities.

Well, I am experiencing problems with my icelink connected with an ipod classic. I'm waiting for icelink to follow on the following issue. If I get any information on how to solve this I'll let you know.

Since last year March I have been using an Ice Link plus in my Honda Civic together with my 5th generation ipod (60 GB). It has been working absolutely great. I was using it in 'ipod mode' and was able to control it via the (volume and track change) buttons on the civic's steering wheel.

Since I have swithed to an ipod classis the button (from the steering wheel) are not working anymore with the icelink except for the volume button. So I can't change any tracks anymore. It looks like icelink is 'hanging' in the disk menu mode from the car stereo. I can only see track 98/99 and switch disks by pressing the track changer on the steering wheel longer than a few seconds...

Plugging back my old ipod again I get the same behaviour. So it looks like the ipod classic has screwed up something...

Is there a way to reset icelink?
Since I was not using the controls of the 'icelink' mode I'm not sure what the firmware version is.
Can I reset the icelink using my old ipod by adding/removing some files on it?

There is no firmware upgrade available (anymore) for my device. I got the following reply with a very simple solution. Just reset the IceLink by disconnecting the fuse or car battery. Now I'm able to fully control the dension again.

------------------
Thomas,

we did not experience such problem. Try to reset the ice>Link removing the fuse of the radio for few minutes.

Let us know the result.

Hello,

Removing the fuse of the radio? Can you be more specific?

Regards,

Thomas
------------------
Thomas,

icde>Link is powered by the radio via the CD changer plug. To reset ice>Link you have to unpower it comletely. Switching off the radio is not enough. Possibilities:

1) Disconnect the cables - it requires removal of the radio and/or dismounting the dashboard, not advised

2) Disconnect the car battery - can cause problems for other devices in the car

3) Locate the fuse of the radio in the fusebox - this is the simplest and most secure way, no tools are needed and other car electronics are not influenced.

I was resetting it by disconnecting the car battery and it works. Now I 'm able to fully control the dension again.

Thanks for your advice!

Cheers,

Thomas
