mouse left click problem

My left click (not the right click) on my mouse stops working. I started with my wireless Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse (loved it on my PC). It would stop working. I would either have to wait or reboot or reconnect mouse and keyboard. Everything else worked but the left click. In searching for info, everything pointed to the mouse being defective. I plugged in a wired USB mouse. Developed same problem. I have recently purchased a new Logitech mouse and installed it including downloading the Mac OS 10.4 driver from Logitech. Still have same problem. It seems like it must be with my Mac or the OS? Any ideas?

my issue could be related.... i have the latest 24" imac with leopard and all its updates installed. sometimes (intermittently) the left mouse button starts acting just like the right button. pretty strange when it happens...... and this symptom will go away on its own. originally i had the problem with the stock wired mighty mouse that came with the system. installed a bt knsington Si670m mouse and get the same intermittent symptoms. mouse usually works fine, but every so often it just goes wierd. my guess is a defect in the OS.
i know that this is a tiger discussion, but sounds like the same problem could exist in leopard.

Hello everyone!
I'm having the same problem. My left-click stopped working after turning my browser on and leaving it idle for 10 minutes or so. First time it happened, I didn't think twice - just did a restart and it went away. This morning, turned the computer on, went on line, then went to make coffee, etc. Came back about 10min later, and yet again, left-click behaves as right-click, Grrr. At least the coffee was good, hehe. I'm using the mouse I got with my iMac 8 months ago, (wire mighty). So far, it's only happened twice in two days, but as I can see, I'm not the only one. Mouse or OS problem? I'll try googling around and come back if I find a solution... 🙂

Hi cecady and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...

By chance have you checked your System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse? Check your preferences to see if anything there that might make a difference.

You might try a different user account. If you are the sole user of your Mac and just use that one account, do this: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Accounts.

If some settings are dimmed, click the lock icon and type an administrator name and password.
Click Add + and type the user's name.
If you don't want to use the short name generated automatically, type a new short name. (Once the account is created, you won't be able to change the short name.)
Type the user's password in the Password and Verify boxes.
Type a hint to help the user remember the password if they have trouble remembering it at login.

Logon to that account and see if your mouse works properly. If it does, then the problem lies in your admin account and at least it isn't system wide.

Carolyn 🙂

I'm also having trouble with the left button on my G5 Logitech mouse. It has worked flawlessly for the past year, but something has definitely gone awry. I have a feeling it has to do with the Mac 10.4.11 software or the recent security update maybe.

I have just installed the logitech control centre software, which is supposed to give me increased control over how Mac OSX uses the mouse, but it won't even recognize their own mouse.

I am (was?) having the same problem. My left mouse button would stop working right after boot. It has to be a software issue since my trackpad button would not left-click, and my bluetooth mouse would not left-click (I even tried a USB mouse), but I could do everything else (e.g. right-click, use the scroll wheel). The only thing I installed recently was Twitterific (which I had starting at boot)... I tried removing it and after a reboot my left button is working. I'm not sure if that was the problem, but if I don't see this issue again I'm going to assume it was.
