Q: Apple Works 6

When I try to open Apple Works in Go - Applications, then click on AW6, a menu comes up with all of the background files (I don't know what to call them) - Essentials, Extras, Clippings, etc., but not my documents. I click on AW6 in menu and it crashes with error-1409. I have to open the Hard Drive, then open AW, then I can open my documents. However from that screen I can't arrange them by name, etc. because it shows I'm in the Finder. Once I get the file open it shows up in the dock, but I can't open AW from the dock. This, of course, along with a lot of other problems, has just happened since I installed Leopard. Any suggestions?

Try removing the Recent Documents in the Appleworks documents of your Users -> yourname -> Documents folder.

Well, I suggest iWorks. Appleworks is quite old. I have to say, though, it was pretty cool for it's day, and even now it holds up. I had fun going through it again, after a long time.

That said, it crashed on me every time I hit the "Recent Items" tab. The other tabs worked ok. I tossed the preference folder for AW, and restarted it. Same behavior. Could be a little long in the tooth is the problem.

This question sent me to appleworks documents for the first time in a LONG time. My "recent items" were a couple of years old. Everything seemed to work fine, though. So I am thinking that this is not an inherent compatibility problem but that there is some corruption somewhere. Perhaps a font issue? Just a thought.

I'm sorry - could you please give me a step-by-step description of removing the Appleworks documents. I don't understand how to do it. I've been using Macs for over 20 years! I'm getting a little "long in the tooth" too! I've never had as much trouble with an upgrade as I'm having with Leopard.
    Thanks.

    Actually, to be exact, it's:

Users > (yourname) > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items

that you should delete. You don't have to remove ANY documents at all -- just that one folder, which will be automatically recreated by the program next time you launch it. You won't lose any documents, and after that AppleWorks 6.2.9 will work just fine in Leopard!

Glad to hear it! If you could mark my message as "Solved," that would let others know that the question has been answered.

It still won't work for me. I can still open AppleWorks from the Hard Drive. It takes a bit longer, but I can live with that. Thank you for your response.

I had a similar problem. AW would crash as soon as it appeared on screen. I deleted the recent items folder and then it launched OK, but when I opened my database file (the only reason I keep AW), it crashed as soon as that file appeared. I launched it again, and this time everything worked just fine.
