HP Color LaserJet 1600

Apologies if this has been answered, but here goes...

Just purchased an iMac and upgraded to Leopard. I am trying to get an HP Color LaserJet 1600 however Leopard doesn't have the drivers for this printer. Does anyone know if there is a driver available or an alternative driver that I can use.

Thanks in advance for any assistance offered...

Sorry, I forgot to answer your question previously. Yes I am quite happy with the colors. I am however not a purist in the graphics business. So I don't look at the colors as a printer or artist would with a magnifier. I am very happy with my results on the color printing. I have a newer iMac running the latest up to date software and I am having no problems with it at all. I have tried the printer with a Dell Laptop and it worked nicely. I haven't tried it with my older Apple laptop yet.

So I am really happy with the price I paid, $220. and the results that I get unlike some others here on the forum.

hi matt

finally bought the printer (hp color laserjet 1600) and thoroughly followed your instructions. i also believe i have the latesst version of ghostscript. the prints are fine for coloured documents. photos, however, look like tinctured black and white shots. only the very strong colors get a bit of paint.

i checked the .icm profiles. turns out that the terminal install process "foo2zjs" for an clj 1600 only installs the files hpclj2600n-0.icm, hpclj2600n-1.icm and km2430_2.icm. you mentioned the last one in your last reply, but i found out that the profiles you gave are related to a konica minolta printer.

what are these profile files doing anyway? is it ok to leave the printer settings to "default icm color correction"? or do i have to pick a particular color correction?

have you got any further advice in that matter? help is greatly appreciated.

thanks, oli

The .icm files I mentioned were the wrong ones for the LaserJet 1600. Sorry about the confusion. My error in not checking the installer script more carefully.

The developer has a good graphic on his site that shows how it all fits together. See _ http://foo2hp.rkkda.com/_

I don't have this printer, so I can't give you a step by step solution. My advice is to experiment and see what the various setting under Printer Features do for you. Remember that third party drivers are not the same as those that would be provided by the manufacturer. Some are quite good, others fall short of being ideal. I'm not sure how fully developed the drivers for the LaserJet 1600 are at present.

Can anyone help with this:

"The name or password entered for area “CUPS” on localhost:631 was incorrect. Please try again. "

I have tried to change the setting from monochrome to color, and after doing so, I got the above message. I have tried all combinations of usernames and passwords. Anyone facing the same problem?

Thanks.

I haven't had any difficulties with the username and password. Suppose you need to have administrator rights. I just fill in my regular osx user/administrator name and the corresponding password.
but i found out in leopard you don't have to change settings via cups. when printing you can easily change settings in the print window. just select "printer features" from the drop down menu and you'll be able to change all the parameters straight from there. hope that helped.

cheers, oli

btw. once i found out i had the old version of ghostscript running and i updated it, colours would work just fine with me. thanks again matt!

Hello iamnothere!
I hope you are there, because I need some help.
I am a "newbie" to mac. I have been a PC user for countless years and just purchased by very first mac a few weeks ago. Needless to say, I had just purchased a hp color lj1600 in October for my very old gateway. It worked fine then.
Obviously, now I have issues with my new mac. Anyways, I downloaded all the files that were listed in this forum and yes I have print capabilities in monochrome. I read your post and for the life of me I cannot find where I can "easily change settings in the print window, just select printer features from the drop down menu"... like you quoted.
I open up a template from Pages that has color. I choose to print it and I don't see anywhere in the window where I can choose a drop down window for printer features.

Could you possibly give me some instructions on how to get where you have been to change the printing options from monochrome to color? I would greatly appreciate it!
I've also tried the "cups" thing and get the same error message for my login and password issue as listed in previous posts by other people.

Thanks ahead of time for your help!

Welcome aboard Mac. Have you ever been able to switch between color and black printing with another printer? There is a color menu choice in the print command window. Some time you aren't always given that option at first. Try some different setting to get the color option menu to appear. I am not a tech and just blunder my way through till I can get it to appear. If you can print in color and switch to black printing with another printer you should be able to do the same with the HP. Hopefully not there will come around and give better directions.

I realise there's no happy ending here, but I wanted to add another post to (hopefully) speed things along.

The real drivers appear to exist, they recognise the printer, the print log says the job is done, but the printer is silent.

So, I'm back to using my wintel piece of junk to produce my beautiful Pages documents (the unix thing scares me a bit, I'm really not good with all that stuff, but I sure as **** appreciate the community puts in on these kinds of things).

One nice thing to say about HP: even though they couldn't help me, they gave me 2.5 hours of support (live chat) and were very courteous and professional, while trying everything under the sun. I was impressed that they didn't give me the "we don't support Apple" and really tried to help.

Meantime, buy a different make and model of printer, folks. 🙂
