HELP
Updated (tried to) iphone to 1.2.2 - whichever just came out - and it seems to have killed it. When I connect the iphone it detects it, but asks to restore it. When I click restore, it tries, but then I get a message that unknown error occurred (9). No idea what that means.
The iphone simply has a picture of the itunes icon, a picture of a cable and an arrow pointing to the itunes icon. Anything I can do - or do I own a paperweight?

Assuming it isn't hacked or unlocked Apple will fix it for you or replace it. But first try a few things:

1. If you are using a USB hub to connect the iPhone, don't. Connect directly to a USB 2 port on your computer.

2. Check the cable and dock; if you have a spare iPod USB cable connect it directly to the iPhone, not through the dock.

3. Verify that you have the latest version of iTunes (7.5)

4. Try a forced restore. Reboot your computer, start iTunes, connect the iPhone to the computer. Wait. If you get an error, or nothing happens for several minutes hold the sleep/wake and home buttons for a long time (~20 seconds) until you get a message on the screen that it is restoring.

If all of these fail take it to your Apple store.

Are any of you guys connecting through a USB 1.1 port (instead of a USB 2.0 port)? If so, I think that may be the source of your problems.

I have been having tons of problems connecting my iPhone to my 5 year old 1Ghz iMac, and Apple Support says that it is probably due to my slow USB 1.1 connections. They said my computer is not supported by the iPhone.

BTW, how lame... That iMac was top of the line when I bought it.

Two possibilities come to mind. The first is to borrow someone else's Mac just to restore the phone. You can then go back to syncing with your iMac, since that seems to work. I'm pretty sure the Genius Bar an Apple store would do this for you.

Of course, you probably really want a new iMac, anyway; here's your excuse 😉

The other is to look for a Firewire to USB adapter, if such a thing exists.

I think I actually got it restored now... and now, each time I am able to sync about 3-5 songs before I get the beachball and the whole thing 'times out'.

You are VERY correct about my desire for a new iMac. Too bad I just bought my first house, or I might be able to actually afford one! I have enough excuses... now I need cash. 😉

Firewire to USB. I will see what I can find... it doesn't seem very likely, but you never know! Thanks for the help. I will report back if I find anything. I know there are a lot of people affected by this issue.

What is kind of ironic is that if I would have bought a PC in this time frame, it would have definitely had USB 2.0. You know? Dang.
