New iMacs still freezing? (After week 42)

I have waited for quite some time now to buy a new iMac and I am just wondering if the very latest iMacs still have the freezing problem?

So: Anyone with an iMac from week 42 or later who still got a freezer?

I am looking to buy the 24" 2.4 GHz version. It they still have problems I might just wait until after MacWorld in January in case there will be an update then.

Power Mac G5 2.0 dual, eMac G4 1.25, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I couldn't agree more with what you are saying about your freezing problems, but just be carefull not to say anything about Apple's responsibility or what may be a fair compensation to those who have had a terrible experience with their new iMac. It may lead to your thread showing up as missing in a short time. I don't think anybody can say how many iMacs have this problem, as this forum probably represents only a small fraction of the total number of iMac customers. I would venture to say only a small number of buyers participate in forums like this and you are more likely to post a "problem" rather than a "no problem" unit. So, coming up with a percentage of units actually having the trouble is hard to estimate and would probably only be known by Apple. I have been waiting to buy a new iMac for quite some time, but I don't think I should be having to think about whether I'm going to be lucky enough to get one without the problem or, if I don't, having to jump through hoops to get one that works properly.

FWIW, my iMac was produced in week 42 and never froze in the week that I have it. I've been careful to avoid installing the iMac Software Update but installed everything else that was offered. Today, after upgrading to 10.5.1., it no longer offers the iMac Software Update and doesn't offer the firmware update either.

So to me this looks like Apple nailed this problem down in week 42 or thereabouts and has been shipping new iMacs with the upgraded firmware since.

I ran the software updater and Firmware 1.0 for video was one of them.

It installed fine and I rebooted.

The OS never posted again after that.

I re-installed the OS from disk and "saved user settings".

Ran the software updates, that included the Display Firmware update and rebooted.

Problems solved.

No fan issue and no freezing.

My wife loves her iMac!

My 24-inch arrived today, is a week 41 build with 10.4.10 grey-labeled Install DVDs, and I'm very happy I bought it (the standard build - replaced the 1GB of RAM myself):D

Apparently I bought from an unauthorized seller (on eBay), as it had no phone support according to Apple, even though Apple's records had my correct date of purchase. However, I went ahead and registered an AppleCare for it, and now it's fully covered for the next three years:) Yes, I expect to keep it for all three years, just like my first Indigo iMac G3, which still works.

Was offered and installed the following Updates successfully:

2007-11-19 18:56:01 -0800: Installed "QuickTime" (7.3)
2007-11-19 18:56:08 -0800: Installed "AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002" (5.2.1)
2007-11-19 18:56:13 -0800: Installed "Keynote Update" (4.0.1)
2007-11-19 18:56:20 -0800: Installed "Pages Update" (3.0.1)
2007-11-19 18:56:24 -0800: Installed "Numbers Update" (1.0.1)
2007-11-19 18:56:31 -0800: Installed "iDVD Update" (7.0.1)
2007-11-19 18:56:37 -0800: Installed "iMovie Update" (7.1)
2007-11-19 18:56:43 -0800: Installed "GarageBand Update" (4.1)
2007-11-19 18:56:59 -0800: Installed "iPhoto Update" (7.1)
2007-11-19 18:57:01 -0800: Installed "Compatibility Update for QuickTime 7.2" (1.0)
2007-11-19 18:57:14 -0800: Installed "iTunes" (7.5)
2007-11-19 18:57:20 -0800: Installed "iWeb Update" (2.0.2)
2007-11-19 18:57:24 -0800: Installed "iLife Support" (8.1.1)
2007-11-19 18:57:27 -0800: Installed "iMac Software Update" (1.2.1)
2007-11-19 18:58:46 -0800: Installed "Mac OS X Update (Intel)" (10.4.11)
2007-11-19 21:03:22 -0800: Installed "iPhoto Update" (7.1.1)

Although it was not offered at any time, after the above installs I downloaded and attempted the Graphics Firmware update anyway, and got the not needed message.

This is by far the best iMac yet, it's simply perfect, and I don't seem to mind having the 24-inch size after all:D

I sincerely hope that everyone with issues can get theirs fixed quickly so they can also start to enjoy them. Will be setting up a new AirPort Extreme "n" base station next.
