All my music is gone from Ipod, still on PC but greyed out

Yesterday, I ran the upgrade to 1.2.2 for my Ipod classic. After the upgrade was complete I tried to play a song but all 7 GB of my music is gone.

The music is still visible on my PC in Itunes. When I plug my Ipod into my PC, the Ipod show up in Itunes. Itunes can see all the songs on my Ipod but they are in grey print.

What have I done now? And more important how do I fix it.

Ipod Classic, Windows ME

I think I have the same problem. iTunes recognizes my iPod and I can see the music library, but when I use the iPod without iTunes it appears that the iPod is blank. I found that changing the settings to manual will fix the greyed-out library problem, but won't put the music back on the iPod. I restored the iPod and attempted all the suggested fixes. No luck yet. Mine problem also occured after the upgrade.

I am copying Itunes over to another machine to see if the problem is related to my PC.

..... About 15 minutes later ...........

OK, this is getting spooky. I attempted to set my IPOD to manually manage (and enable disk use) so I could copy my songs over to another machine.

I got an error (-53) (Unknown Error) "Ipod cannot be synced" when I attempted to make this change.

It sounds like you (and others in this thread) have a 5th generation iPod, +not a Classic+. The 5G and 5.5G iPods got a firmware update to 1.2.2 yesterday, not the Classic. For 1.2.2 to work properly you have to have iTunes 7.5 ... and if you have Windows 2000 (or ME as your sig shows) then you're in trouble since iTunes for Windows v7.5 only works on XP and Vista.

This problem is caused by a conflict with Ipod 1.2.2 and iTunes earlier than 7.5.
If you are not using XP SP2 or Vista, you cannot install iTunes 7.5.
I had these same symptoms when I allowed iTunes to install 1.2.2 on my iPod last night.
I spoke with Apple support today and they told me that Apple has no way to install older versions of the software and BTW, my iPod is out of warranty so I will have to pay them to help me fix the iPod that their software broke.

I found a solution which will work in Windows.

1. Find the iPod Software Updates files.
They will be found in
...\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates

2. Be sure that the 1.2.1 files are in the folder:

ipod_13.1.2.1.ipsw
ipod_13.1.2.1.ipsw.signature

3. Delete the iPod 1.2.2 files from your computer.

ipod_13.1.2.2.ipsw
ipod_13.1.2.2.ipsw.signature

3. Start iTunes and then plug the iPod in.

On the summary page, click on the Restore button. It will warn you about installing an older version of the software (exactly what you want!).

When the process is complete, you will be back to 1.2.1 which works fine with iTunes 7.3.2.

I have gone through the same thing. Before upgrading my iPod software I was prompted to upgrade to the latest iTunes software, which I did not do.

So, we all have updated iPods with outdated iTunes.

When I get home I will run Software Update to get the latest iTunes and I will bet that after that my (and all of your) iPods will once again sync just fine.

By the way, this makes even more sense when you consider that our Pods still have all of our iPhoto pictures on them.

Keep your fingers crossed.
