iPhone USB connection keeps cycling on and off, causes scanner rediscovery

I wasn't having any issues, then my iPhone started disconnecting and reconnecting to Windows. It will sit there a few minutes, then the iPhone beeps and Windows beeps as they do when I first place the iPhone in the USB dock. It does this whether I'm in iTunes or not. As Windows rediscovers the iPhone, it also rediscovers the scanner, causing the scanner to run. A ballon message appears in the tray saying there was a problem identifying the USB device, which is the iPhone. If I click on My Computer, the iPhone camera is shown. If I'm using iTunes, the frequent cycling is really a nuisance, since it syncs after each discovery cycle and screws up what I'm doing in iTunes. This is a real pain and I need to fix it. It was doing this with 1.1.1. Updating to 1.1.2 didn't help. Reinstalling iTunes didn't help. In device manager I told Windows to find a new driver for the iPhone camera, which it did, and that didn't help.

This is resolved, I guess. I don't use the scanner much, so I disconnected it. I also plugged the iPhone USB cable directly into the computer rather than go through a hub. It doesn't cycle anymore. I put the iPhone in the dock, Windows beeps saying the device connected, and that's it. I had the scanner plugged into the same hub. This WAS WORKING. I don't know why it stopped working. I should have only done one thing at a time: disconnect scanner OR bypass hub. I can't therefore say what fixed the problem.
