Thanks for the excellent response, it is greatly appreciated. I was aware of the port you describe but having usb audio out would simplify some wiring issues for me and just generally be awesome.
Ok, well I'm not 100% sure I understand what you mean, but I think you're asking if there are any USB audio devices for the Mac that have a digital out? If that is your question, then the answer is yes -- this is the first thing I found with a couple of minutes Googling, but there are bound to be alternatives...
Thanks again. However, no, that's not what I mean. I want my MacBook Pro to output audio digitally via its USB port. As opposed to digitally via its other ports. So the digital stream comes out of usb instead of the minijack.
It does work into my Benchmark DAC/USB. Went into Audio with USB attached and it showed up and works like a champ. Now if I can just stream consistently from the hard drive attached to my airport I'll be there.
