iPod/iPhone adapter for BMW/Mini Cooper not working w/ iPhone

So I bought a stock built adapter for my Mini Cooper (owned by BMW and uses a BMW sound system). It works with my iPod, but not w/ iPhone. It says this accessory is not meant to work with it, but if you turn it on airplane mode it works, but slowly. However, the iPhone is an iPod. Any suggestions on how to get it to work properly?

The iPhone is only part a iPod and all accesories made for the ipod will not work with the iPhone

Works with iPhone
Look for the “Works with iPhone” logo to find electronic accessories designed to connect specifically to iPhone and certified by the developer to meet Apple performance standards.

iPod Accessories
Many iPod accessories that use the 30-pin connector — such as chargers and speakers — may also be compatible with iPhone, even though they haven’t been certified as “Works with iPhone.”
When you connect an uncertified accessory, your iPhone will notify you and present you with the option to go into Airplane Mode, which turns off the communication capability of the iPhone while it’s connected to that accessory. This means that you’ll avoid potential audio interference, but you’ll be unable to make or receive calls. If you choose not to enter Airplane Mode, you can make and receive calls, but you may experience some audio interference.

Hope this helps
