Audio Skipping in recording and playback

Hey gang,

Ever since my Leopard install a few weeks ago, Soundtrack (2.0.1) has been skipping playback very bad. The audio cuts out for a split second every 2 seconds or so, and it's random and nasty sounding. Clearly this won't do. Ironically, myspace and other websites sites with media are also having the same problem.

anyone have an idea what the deal is?

I haven't changed my hardware config, but upggraded OS's, and everything had been running well under the previous OS. I notice a general sliggishness that I fed with more ram and it's still a problem. Before I start throwing more hardware the problem... your advice please.

ran diagnostics, everything seems to be working mormally,

what's next?

Dual G5, Mac OS X (10.5)

Couldn't agree with you more. I too am an Apple nut and use several of their products. Failed to mention in my post, that Logic and Garage band and all other audio programs are working fine. I even use the same loops to test and the problem lies with STP. Tried different audio sources including the internal speaker and no change. Apple techies are going to work on duplicating the issue and are supposed to call me back next week.

Same problem here quad G5, will not play clips in the browser, it stops and starts randomly, when playing anything in the timeline it glitches constantly. Also Garageband seems to be screwy too, it will not play at all. Logic, FCP, iTunes all work fine. Is the Garageband fault connected I wonder ?

I recently tried an archive and install of 10.5 and upgrade to 10.5.2 and re-install of STP, rather randomly Soundtrack didn't work immediately after the install, then just started working for a while last night, tonight back to the same problem

Update! Apple tech support called me back today. We have yet to resolve this issue. As of now I have installed Tiger on another drive and updated. Installed STP by itself and ran the app. Loops work fine and even tried the Ducati demo and it worked as well. Installed the rest of LogicStudio with exception of the content discs. Ran software update and launched STP again. Works fine. Problem has to be with Leopard! But wait, I did install STP on an iMac 20" G-5 with Leopard installed and it works fine. So could it be a Leopard and 2.3Dual Core related issue? Have to figure this one out.

Ok! 5:00a.m. blitz so I had to try it. Upgraded the Tiger drive to Leopard. After QT update was needed launched STP and we are back to having the same problem. I performed all the necessary updates one at a time, tried STP and loop playback is still messed up. Leaves me to believe that it is Leopard and my 2.3 Dual Core. I am in the process of installing the rest of Logic, except for the content discs, on the iMac that STP works fine on. I will also run the updates individually, try STP and try to pinpoint an update as the problem.

hey DR999 did you trty that unplugging thang? i just installed FCPS2 and on my G5 Quad core 2.5 with 4GB ram and had the skipping and popping until i cleared the user cache and sys cache (using a nice little app called cocktail) shut down unplugged for 5 min (really 5 min!) and then reset the PRam on startup and now it's fine. i also had the loop issue with some loops playing badly, other not at all. this has also been resolved.

I have the same stuttering problem when playing back from Ableton Live on the Macbook Pro. iTunes playback is fine. I have two workarounds that work reliably for me:

1. Disable Airport.
2. Use an external USB audio device (i have a Line 6 Pod XT for this purpose).

In other words, the problem appears to be some combination of Airport and the internal sound device. Eliminate one of these two, and it works.

hey robert, DR999, i can second what has happened to you robert, as i just reloaded my project and wouldn't you know the popping issue has returned. what a drag. it seems also that the more i use STP the greater the problem becomes. i too am running 10.5.2 on my G5 quad core. tempted to go back and install on another partition under tiger. but i must say i am disappointed after dropping all that cash to buy FCS to be wrestling with these issues instead of working. a first for me with apple software! and all that after my girlfriend dumped me for her ex!
