Cannot SCAN with Samsung SCX-4500 Printer, New iMac w/Leopard

I'm having the same problem - printer works great, but scanning is not happening. New macbook with leopard preinstalled, I bought the printer and the macbook direct from apple. "Everything should just work" right, since I bought it from Apple? ImageCapture application says "no image capture device connected" even after a reboot. That's right, I actually tried rebooting my mac to see if it would help. It didn't.

I have the same problem with my Samsung SCX-4725FN. It was working fine before I upgraded to Leopard, now it doesn't scan. I tried installing the latest drivers from Samsung (which had an OS 10.5 labeled on it), but it didn't help. I can still print through USB and network, but can't scan. 😟

I would take it to the store and ask them to demonstrate the scanning function for you. If it works, they may be able to advise what's wrong with the setup you have; if it doesn't, they keep it and give you your money back!

Just a note... I found out MY problem is not with the Samsung or Twain, but rather Macromedia Fireworks and Leopard. It still will not work in Fireworks, but it scanned fine from GraphicConverter. I suggest you try this and see if it works for you.

First off, when Samsung labels a button "Scan to PC", they mean it. That button only works with Windows PCs not Macs.

To get it to the Samsung SCX 4500 to scan on your Mac you need to acquire the image using some other software. I used Preview.

Put the picture or document that you want scanned on the bed. Open Preview. From the File menu, select the Import Image... option.

The scanner activates and you will see, you guessed it, a preview of what is to be scanned. Notice that the scan button is grayed out.

You now have to click and drag a box around what you want scanned. Once you draw your box identifying the exact image to be scanned, the Scan button is enabled. Now adjust any options, and hit Scan. Enjoy.

Works fine, when attached to an USB port. Question remains - how to scan from a local network Mac?
