Black Screen - Inverter Board or Backlight ??

I have a MacBook Pro with a blacked out screen, but you can still see the desktop. To me this is one of two options... the backlight which I assume means the purchase of a new LCD display, or the inverter board.

What would be the best way to track which problem this could be.

Thanks,

Do you have access to an external display? I think (but I'm not sure) if it's just the backlight, you will get video on the external. I also think that if you can still see the desktop, it is likely the problem is with the backlight.

Ifixit just shows the display as a replaceable part and does not list the inverter.

Do you happen to have Applecare? If so, the display should be covered by the warranty.

Good luck!

I do have a problem with my MacbookPro (2.33 GHz, 10 moths old )
But only with leopard! Direct with the install DVD the machine boots from CD (Apple Logo with wheel spinning) But when the leopard Install window is on screen (to choose your language) The backlight is off) Several test no go, Tiger (10.4.11)is good. I installed Leopard with a 23" Cinema and it installed fine.
But now when i boot up my MacBook Pro the backlight goes out when the inlog window is on screen.
Tried the install DVD with Tiger and the backlight is OK (I stopped installing when the choose language window was on screen)
Strange... I will bring it to Apple repair.
