Can I goto apple store if bought elsewhere

If I purchase a new macbook from Amazon (save tax and they have a rebate) and have problems with it, can I take into a mac store for repair and/or replacement?

Yes, you can. I haven't heard anything otherwise. I bought my MBP instore at CompUSA, and have taken it to the Apple store to get fixed a couple of times now.

Purchase the Apple Service Plan for Notebooks, either from Amazon if they have it, or from Apple's online store, CompUSA, Apple retail store, or pretty much any Apple authorized reseller. It extends your warranty from one year, to three years. Trust me, it's worth it.
