Using Internet Sharing on Macbook Pro 17" (intel) with the iPhone

Hi,

i like to use Internet Sharing on my Macbook Pro 17" (intel) with OS X Leopard.
Enabling Internet Sharing on Leopard works just fine. I share my Ethernet Connection with the Airport.

I can connect to the Airport sharing the connection with multiple devices.
It does however not work with the iPhone.

The phone can see the network. It even connects and gets its lease (IP Adress / etc)...

I did open a terminal and did ping the iphone. Doing that i disconnected the iphone from the wifi network and connected again. I found out that immediately after connecting the connection is working (ping reply) for about 2 or 3 seconds and then there is no reply... Sometimes it is working... but 99% of the connections dont work... (working for 2 seconds and then no reply)

This is only with the Internet Sharing on the Macbook Pro (intel) in combination with the iPhone. I did not have any other wifi problems with the iPhone or with Internet Sharing on my Macbook Pro.

Exactly the same problem here (just on a standard MacBook), haven't found any solution yet. Seems to be a blocked port or something. Apparently quite a number of Mac users noticed this issue. 10.5.1 didn't resolved it.

somi,

Have you tried your iPhone with WiFi at a different location on a different WiFi network? If so, did it perform normally there?

Have you tried with sharing from a different Mac with your iPhone?

This is only with the Internet Sharing on the Macbook Pro (intel) in combination with the iPhone.
I did not have any other wifi problems with the iPhone or with Internet Sharing on my Macbook Pro.

See i use the iPhone in lots of wifi networks without Problems. Also i often use ICS on the Macbook Pro with other 'clients' without problems...

I can even reproduce the problem with 3 macbooks and 2 iphones 😉 LOL

It is also not fixed in Leopard 10.5.1 😉

I have the same problem, the iphone Safari simply does not load any pages through an airport internet connection shared through my MacBook Pro. Disabling the firewall does not change this problem.

I just solved the issue by setting the channel for airport under Airport Options in sys prefs>sharing>internet sharing from Automatic to a specific channel (I used 8). Now the iphone browser works like a charm

This doesn't happen to me at work, all clients are running 10.4.10.
We have 150 networked macs, I have enabled internet sharing on 5 desktops to give complete coverage for my iphone and laptop. Maybe it is a Leopard issue? I have 1.1.2 firmware on iPhone BTW.

No luck for me! Tried every Channel and every MacBook Pro and MacBook in the company. The only Internet Sharing working is a PowerBook G4 running Leopard 10.5.1. iPhone works with the Powerbook without any problem.

Yes! I did not get it to work with Tiger also.

I think its a Macbook Pro / iPhone issue. Because other clients work well also the iPhone works on a Powerbook using Internet-Sharing.

Aaron@SODE: No luck for me! Tried every Channel and every MacBook Pro and MacBook in the company. The only Internet Sharing working is a PowerBook G4 running Leopard 10.5.1. iPhone works with the Powerbook without any problem.

The same applies to me! I really think it is a problem with the iPhone / Macbook Pro.

mucmac: what model of macbook Pro do you use? I cant get it to work on a Macbook Pro 17"

I am having the same Problem, the weird thing is that before the last iphone update both of our iphones were able to share the interenet connection from my Sierra Wireless AirCard. There has got to be a way to fix this. PLEASE HELP!

Same thing for me with MacMini 10.4.11 and iPod touch. The internet is shared for 2-3 seconds after connecting then it is lost. It is not an airport issue though: after the airport connection I can, from the iPod, at all times see web pages hosted on my Mini, but no pages on the internet. It seems a problem in the sharing... In other public wifi connections my iPod works perfectly.

Same here. Using an iPhone 1.1.2 from O2 UK, tried with a shared internet connection from a Mac Mini Intel and a MacBook. No luck.

Going to try with an iBook G4.

All Macs are using Tiger 10.4.11

If it still doesn't work, I'll go to the Apple Store, have booked an appointment for today. I'll also bring one of my portables to try to track down the problem with the Genius' help.

Interesting! Are you hosting any complex web pages on your Mini? I just tried, and I've been able to get the default Apache page off my Mini, but then I can also get similar tiny web pages off the internet in general; smaller pages can seemingly "sneak through" before getting cut off...
