I personally would be satisfied to look at my screen after the call and see any text alerts that I might have missed while on a phone call.
In the old days of land lines, call waiting used to alert you with a very quick "click" sound. If the iPhone is set to vibrate then the phone will vibrate in your ear which in turn makes it hard to hear a continuing conversation from the other person on the line.
